This book provides the first comprehensive history of the Native Peoples of North America from their arrival in the western hemisphere to the present. It describes how Native Peoples have dealt with the environmental diversity of North America and have responded to the different European colonial regimes and national governments that have established themselves in recent centuries. It also examines the development of a pan-Indian identity since the nineteenth century and provides a comparison not found in other histories of how Native Peoples have fared in Canada and the United States.

From Library Journal
In this wide-ranging history of the Native peoples of North America from prehistory to the present, edited by a Canadian archaeologist and a former historian with the Smithsonian, a variety of authors present a huge amount of information in a very concise format. Chapters are both thematic ("Native peoples in Euro-American historiography") and regional ("the Arctic from Norse contact to modern times"). Where experts have differing opinions, such as the earliest dates for Native peoples in the Americas or the population of North America in 1492, authors explain their positions and refer readers to other points of view through discussion and footnotes. As the broad nature of the essays precludes presenting specific tribal information, this work complements other recent reference works, such as the Department of Commerce's American Indian Reservations and Trust Areas (1996). Despite indifferent indexes and occasional information gaps, these volumes should have a prominent place in most library reference collections.?Mary B. Davis, Huntington Free Lib., Bronx

"More than a thousand pages long, published in two parts as a boxed set, it looks authoritative, perhaps even definitive." Colin G. Calloway, The Journal of American History

"The series will provide readers accustomed to monographic studies with a valuable `big picture' and should prove an important reference tool for a wide readership." Paige Raibmon, BC Studies

"...this superb account of the Native peoples of North America has no rivals....A must for every reference section and a bargain for private scholarly and lay libraries." Jamie S.Scott, Religious Studies Review

"The essays are superb and demonstrate a profound mastery of the subject areas, including a good balance between interpretation and factual data....The result is a clarification of history that is quite remarkable and proves exceedingly useful for grasping the larger issues that have affected Native peoples....In summary, then, this is a superb collection of essays." Letters in Canada 1997

"All the chapters are written by acknowledges experts, and each is packed with authoritative information." American Reference Book Annual

CAVEAT EMPTOR!
By D Sparkman
The plus side is that the series is exhaustive in its detail. Well-bound, and sure to grace anyone's book collection or library. I have no problem with the book or its contents, EXCEPT.....
The MINUS side is that one has to approach these books and their marketing on Amazon with an extreme amount of care. The title is misleading; one believes one is getting the whole 3 volume series at one purchase, but what comes is only one "part" (half a "volume", labelled as a "Part", the part being about one sixth of the whole 3 "volume" series on the history of native Americans of the entire American hemisphere)volume. Amazon should correctly specify EXACTLY what one is purchasing when ordering such a book under such a title, especially at the prices these books are sold for, they are not cheap at all, and one can get sucked in to spending far more than one expects to get the full history. The full history of the whole hemisphere is divided into three "Volumes", one each for North-, Meso-, and South America; each "Volume" consisting of two "Parts."
