About the Author
G.S. MADDALA passed away in June 1999 and had been a leading figure in the econometrics profession for more than three decades. At the time of his death, he held the University Eminent Scholar Professorship in the Department of Economics at Ohio State University. His previous university affiliations include Stanford University, University of Rochester and University of Florida.

Very comprehensive

This is a very comprehensive textbook for varieties of must-learn empirical strategies including discrete choice models and sample selection models. The author explains carefully most of the derivations of the models and stated underlying philosophy and developments in the literature.
While the book is still worth reading students will need to have other books to do modern econometric analysis in this fields. Train's "Descrete choice methods with simulation" and Gouriéroux and Monfort's "Simulation-Based Econometric Methods" are examples.
Still, I love this book because I feel excitement of early-days econometricians who developed most of modern econometric frameworks when reading it.

Good, but are you REALLY sure you need this?

This book surely is a classic treatment of limited dependent variable models. However, I suspect most researchers, and definitely almost all graduate stduents will NOT need this book.

1) First, it is VERY outdated. Note that this book has been written in 1983. That is more than *20* years ago. There is nothing here on nonpametric and semiparametric models, which are becoming the standard in this field. For this, a good reference would be Pagan and Ullah, which also contain results for nonparametric and semiparametric general density and regression estimation. The fact that this book is outdated not only means that lots and lots of important tools are not covered here, but it also means that it covers many results and estimators that are no longer considered important.

2) Second, and especially if you are a graduate student, all or almost all the results you will need for your courses is covered very well in textbooks that also cover a wealth of other materials (such as Wooldridge, Amemiya, Ruud, Davidson and McKinnon etc.).

So, overall, do not buy this book simply because it's in your syllabus. Have a look at it first in a library, and then decide if you really need it. But chances are that you won't. The book still deserved 5 stars for what it meant when it was first published.

An effective pedagogical approach

The introductory student of linguistics may be intimidated by the size of this book (over 600 pages) and the small font (probably 9 point). But within a few pages, their fears will almost certainly give way to relief and ultimately satisfaction with the book. Radford has the rare ability to build complex explanations gradually, using just the right balance of supporting quotes (from Chomsky, for example), real-world examples, and visual aids. The reader is carried through a broad range of subject matter by a book that is written in a refreshing and enlightening style. As the other reviewer mentioned, the book never reads as "dated" or "stodgy" - a real accomplishment given the task at hand.

This book has 10 chapters: 1)Goal; 2)Structure; 3)Phrase-markers; 4)Nonu Phrases; 5)Other Phrases; 6)Clauses; 7)The Lexicon; 8)Transformations; 9)WH movement; 10)Alpha Movement. The book has been considered one of the best introductory textbooks of generative grammar. Radford leads the reader to go through the field step by step. He shows the reader the test and evidence of such categories as NP, VP, AP, PP as well as X', which is very useful to the new hand in the study. After each chapter, there are some interesting and challenging excercises for the reader to think about. The book is a basic reading for readers who first come across the GB theory or the MP theory. The book is never too old to be consulted.

A classic but dated

This book is certainly the gold standard in syntax books, but it's pretty dated. For example, the discussion of specifiers is way out of date (nowadays, specifiers are for subject positions), it's discussion of movement is also bound up in early GB theory, which is difficult. Radford's more recent textbooks are much more up to date.

In Depth Analysis, not a narrative

There has been a plethora of books regarding the British Empire in the last decade or so, some of them easily accessible to the general reader such as Niall Ferguson's Empire. There has been a number of reasons for this, much of which involves researchers looking back to history to draw parallels the Globalization of present day. (Examples include the decline of the American Superpower, the rise of a multi-polar world, global free trade and trade flows and the impact of technology (the telegraph, railways, etc.) on world trade and political development, British adventurism in the Middle East and Afghanistan).

But in terms of scholarship, much of the exciting new work has been thanks in great part to impetus provided the multi volume work - The Oxford History of the British Empire which drew a lot of academic interest into what was once seen as a stale subject or a dead horse that had been flogged one too many times.

Having read a number of books on the subject I must admit I wasn't sure what this brick of a book would add to the subject, and thus I was pleasantly surprised and hooked after reading the introduction. This book doesn't treat the British Empire as a monolithic entity nor does it delve into great depth into the personalities that created the Empire. Instead it analyses the Empire as a balance between its constituent parts which included the British Isles (which was a font of investment capital and emmigration to the other parts), India (which provided an army, revenues and security to the East) and the Dominions (which provided manpower and capital under an idea of a shared culture and identity) and a bunch of less important holdings. How unimportant the scramble for Africa was, was particularly revelatory.

It provides analysis as to how these various entities interacted and provided the stability for the Empire project to survive and continue through different crises until it ultimately came apart after the independence of India after the Second World War. It then concluded that without India and the Dominions drifting away into the US sphere of influence, there was no way to sustain the Empire project with just Britain and the other lesser holdings alone.

There is much here for someone who is looking for parallels with our present situation with analyses of global investment flows, the impact of technological change and the global political backdrop and interactions between major powers. However, although it states that it is a general history, it does presuppose a fair amount of familiarity with the material and might not be appropriate as a first text. but still an extremely important work - I am surprised that it has not been publicized more.

A leading book by a leading scholar

The Empire Project is a wide-ranging study of the British Empire that surveys the period from 1830 to 1970. Darwin is widely regarded as one of the leading historians of the British Empire, and this book has been called his life's work and magnum opus. Describing the British empire as a ‘system’, rather than an ‘empire’ in the traditional sense, allows Darwin to analyze under a single framework both formal and informal empire as well as the full range of Britain’s constitutional, diplomatic, political, commercial, and cultural relationships. The starting date itself is highly significant and underscores Darwin’s conception of a ‘world-system’. It is true that by beginning the book in 1830 he omits the early phases of British imperialism. But the preceding period ‘was less the classical era of British world power than its turbulent pre-history’, Darwin writes, ‘when prevailing conditions remained very uncertain’. Only in the 1830s and 1840s did favorable conditions converge ‘for the growth of the loose decentralized construct that sustained British world power into the 1940s’ (p.18). The system that emerged was characterized by the interdependence of its parts, based on four pillars that upheld British power. British naval and military preeminence held together the strategic points and ensured British access to trade and resources; British commercial strength connected overseas territories to a global trading system centered on Britain; demographic growth provided migrants to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa and thereby strengthened Britain’s connection to its settler colonies; and a global network of communication, centered on Britain, facilitated the spread of news, information, and personnel, and allowed Britain to promote the unity of the system. Because this system was diverse and the power exercised over it was diffuse, Darwin focuses on what he calls ‘imperial politics’ – the ‘almost continual debate over the terms of association by which the various member states (including Britain itself) were bound to the British system’ (p.8).

At the heart of Darwin’s study lies a reconsideration of the global context within which the British imperial system existed in the period between 1830 and 1970. Darwin argues that the British empire, as a global world-system, first expanded and later declined and fell according to the opportunities and challenges presented by geopolitical events occurring around the world, many outside the empire and beyond British control. Geopolitical change determined the fate of the British world-system in part, he argues, because the empire lacked a master plan and developed instead as a haphazard collection of disparate elements, presided over by London but guided largely by the schemes devised by private enthusiasts (like Cecil Rhodes) and by ‘men on the spot’ whose ambitions for expansion sometimes complemented and sometimes flouted the policy of the British government. ‘British expansion’, he argues, ‘was driven not by official designs but by the chaotic pluralism of British interests at home and of their agents and allies abroad’ (3). The success of the British world-system, since it depended upon bringing together its disparate parts, thus required specific conditions – a balance in Europe, a ‘passive’ East Asia, stability in the colonies, a globally competitive British economy, and an unaggressive United States – the absence of which would cause the imperial system to break down. ‘The key to British power’, Darwin argues, ‘lay in combining the strength of its overseas components with that of the imperial centre, and managing them – not commanding them – through the various linkages of ‘imperial politics’: some persuasive, some coercive, some official, some unofficial’ (13).

The international dimension in Darwin’s study holds interest for the present discussion because it attempts to shift the geographical focus from the internal developments of Britain and the colonies – whether formal or informal – to the wider world, and particularly to the regions outside the empire whose developments impinged directly on the fate of the British world-system. ‘British possessions,’ he writes, are only ‘parts of the larger conglomerate’ (6). The links between colonial territories and other parts of the system, and the ‘exogenous’ forces of the global environment, exerted a constant pressure on the terms of the British connection. ‘Their collective effect’, Darwin writes, ‘was to create an “external” arena of extraordinary turbulence before 1900, and of volcano-like chaos in the twentieth century’ (8).

The Empire Suddenly Got Interesting

This is Darwin's best book to date. He presents a vast yet detailed analysis of the different 'Empires' we call the British Empire. No one writes as engagingly and convincingly on the topic as Darwin. I especially enjoyed his insights on Britain in South Africa, the Empire's Weakest Link'. I heartily recommend this book!

A New Classic

Dincauze's magnum opus (so far) is an outstanding overview and in-depth analysis of its topic. She sets the standard for the application of archaeological theory to practical archaeology and prehistory in a book which will be a benchmark for the forseeable future. Grounded in both dirt archaeology and theory, the book integrates for a new generation the best of past, current and I think future approaches to archaeology. The publisher is to be commended for good taste in books but poor taste in pricing--the hardcover edition at over $100 is simply out of the range of most people who need to read the book; the paperback price of $39 is also prohibitive but less so. Every pro and most serious amateurs should READ the book, even if they can't afford to buy it.

Fascinating Subject - Impossible Book

This book was assigned as the text for an Environmental Archaeology class. Most of the class, undergraduate and graduate students, found the book exceptionally hard to comprehend. Sentences more appropriate to philosophical treatises or congressional documents written in "govermentese" made the sections difficult to follow. Chapter titling and section headings were very useful for tracking the thread of the author's argument but the clarity and concise wording expected in a scientific textbook was totally missing from the body of the text. The author was undoubtedly very intelligent and knowledgeable but was unable to convey her information in an interesting or succinct manner.

The standard work on Attic pronunciation, though not perfect

VOX GRAECA is W. Sidney Allen's systematic reconstruction of the facts of Attic Greek pronunciation from a wide variety of ancient sources. It begins with a short explanation of common phonetic terms and then analyses first consonants, then vowels, then the Classical Greek tonal accent system. A series of appendices discusses the pronunciation of Greek in England as it was up to Allen's day, and this is still remarkably pertinent to contemporary instruction of pronunciation in the United States.

It must be repeated that VOX GRAECA is not a defence of the Erasmian pronunciation as some, mostly followers of the Modern Greek pronunciation who have never even read the work, have charged. It defends no pre-existing system. Rather, it is a reconstruction from the ground up like nothing before and proposes a system which (sadly) is not often found in academia. In Appendix B, "Selected Quotations", Allen lists numerous statements on pronunciation by ancient writers, and one can see the care by which he extracted a convincing and etymologically sound system from these works.

While VOX GRAECA is unparalled for its reliability, there are a few negative aspects. The first is that Allen makes a variance from IPA for no good reason, in for example using [y] instead of [j] for the palatal semivowel. And though IPA (with Allen's idiosyncracies) is used through most of the book, the quick-reference "Summary of Recommended Pronunciations" at the end gives examples with analogies to undependable Received Pronunciation English, French or German sounds ("o as German 'Gott'", "omega as English 'saw'"). Another aspect of the book that limits its usefulness is that Allen's coverage of changes is limited to only the classical period. He notes that many sounds have changed between Attic or Koine and Modern Greek, but as long as the change was after classical times, he sees no need to tell an exact timeframe for it.

VOX GRAECA, whatever its faults, is still the work of reference for Attic Greek pronunciation, and is a must-have for classicists and historical linguists. One hopes that a new, improved edition might be published someday, but in the meantime I highly recommend picking this up.

Interesting, quite exhaustive research

This book is about greek phonology, not "THE" Greek phonology, as this never existed, but about different phonologic systems that existed between archaic period and Roman (even Byzantine) times, focusing in what we call "classic Greek", that's to say, Attic Greek around V century B.C. The reconstruction is based in proofs such as: modern greek pronunciation, Roman transcription in Latin alphabet, Indian inscriptions of Greek names, etc.

This is not, as some defenders of modern Greek pronunciation claim, an apology of "Erasmian pronunciation" (a term even incorrect aplied to scholar pronunciation), but a reconstruction of old Greek phonologic system, considering the many variations throughout the mediterranean world, because we know that Greek has changed, and modern pronunciation is anachronic for V century B.C. (but some people dare to defend it maybe for chauvisnit, nationalist rather that scientific motivations).

A Standard Book of Classical Linguistics

The previous reviewer's "not bad for a book" would only serve to humilate him, were he in the company of academics. This isn't a book designed to teach someone how to recite Greek in school. It's a book on Ancient Greek phonology. If you are studying Greek, your textbook and instructor will tell you enough to sound it out. This book is for people interested in deeper, historical issues, not restricted to scholars, but not terribly useful for anyone who doesn't already deal with a fair amount of Ancient Greek. It also happens to be a respected source of information that has seen several editions.

There are then over 200 practical suggestions for picture-generated language work. They make use of visual materials which are readily available to teachers anywhere, or easy-to-copy illustrations. The activities can be integrated into all stages of the language teaching process and advice is given on how to adapt the ideas to suit different teaching environments. The book ends with advice on setting up a picture library, including how to find visuals, how to categorise pictures, and storage methods.
