The Theology of the Letter to the Hebrews (New Testament Theology), by Barnabas Lindars

The Letter to the Hebrews is of particular significance for the most important explanation of the sacrificial death of Christ contained in the New Testament. In this book, Barnabas Lindars explains the circumstances in which Hebrews was written, and expounds the writer's argument at length. At each stage of the survey, the writer's ideas are related to the main topics of New Testament theology. Special attention is paid to the rhetorical style of Hebrews, which marks it out as having been written in response to an urgent practical situation. The concluding chapters show the place of Hebrews in the context of the development of early Christianity, and indicate the lasting value of Hebrews for theology today.

Brings the document to life
By Brian Gamel
Barnabas Lindars masterfully surveys the theological ground covered in the letter to the Hebrews.
While focusing on all the dominant themes (e.g. the preisthood of Christ, the way of perfection, the dichotomy of old and new convenants), Lindars makes a marked contribution in his way of expositing such themes.
First, he claims that the situation to which Hebrews was written was viewed by the author as critical and urgent - Christian believers were in danger of reverting to Judaism because they had no practical (tangible) way of dealing with their consciousness of sin as before under the Jewish cultic system of sacrifice. Setting the letter in view of such a situation brings to light the entire thought-world in which the letter breathes and moves and Lindars is quick to return to the issue at hand as he wades through the letter's theology; this is much preferred to breaking a letter artificially into categories and then treating each subject as distinct.
Secondly, Lindars maintains that the whole of the letter is a concerted argument designed to persuade his readers to avoid the very step he thinks they are in danger of taking. This is really the other side of the coin of the first point, but in turn this allows one to understand that the whole letter is a build up to his main exhortation at the end and see in it the fusion of theology and practice. Furthermore, this has the added benefit of being able to study and unravel the subjects and themes within the letter in linear form, following the arugment of the letter rather than just covering each item in isolation.
The theology in Hebrews is both rich and original and untangling it into a readable format is no easy job, but Lindars does it more than adequately. In the end, he is able to help me see the situation the author's readers faced and understand why his theology was both relevant for them in their day and for us in ours.

A Course in Galois Theory, by D. J. H. Garling

Galois theory is one of the most beautiful branches of mathematics. By synthesising the techniques of group theory and field theory it provides a complete answer to the problem of the solubility of polynomials by radicals: that is, the problem of determining when and how a polynomial equation can be solved by repeatedly extracting roots and using elementary algebraic operations. This textbook, based on lectures given over a period of years at Cambridge, is a detailed and thorough introduction to the subject. The work begins with an elementary discussion of groups, fields and vector spaces, and then leads the reader through such topics as rings, extension fields, ruler-and-compass constructions, to automorphisms and the Galois correspondence. By these means, the problem of the solubility of polynomials by radicals is answered; in particular it is shown that not every quintic equation can be solved by radicals. Throughout, Dr Garling presents the subject not as something closed, but as one with many applications. In the final chapters, he discusses further topics, such as transcendence and the calculation of Galois groups, which indicate that there are many questions still to be answered. The reader is assumed to have no previous knowledge of Galois theory. Some experience of modern algebra is helpful, so that the book is suitable for undergraduates in their second or final years. There are over 200 exercises which provide a stimulating challenge to the reader.

Galois Theory in the British Didactic Style: a gem.
By J. Wiley
Anyone who has at least perused the works of Hardy, Dirac, Swinnerton-Dyer, or any of their suit will know what I mean. There is something unmistakable about this style: pithy, perhaps to a fault, but without any loss of charisma, these authors sacrifice conversational ease for surveyability and structural integrity. With this book, Garling takes a place in the rich British tradition of mathematical artistry.
This is a pretty short book, and while it covers somewhat more than bare-minimum (the ch. on transcendental extensions is unusually deep, for example) it does not aspire to as complete a coverage as something like Dummit and Foote would give. But while theirs is an excellent "standard reference" type text, Garling conveys as much about craftsmanship and mathematical aesthetic as he does about fields and galois groups. This matching of topic and style of course works incredibly well, and here again we find a rich tradition of beautiful exposition (*cough* Artin).
Of course, I shouldn't neglect to mention my favorite part of any text (endeavor?): the problems. Here again Garling displays excellent taste ("Remember that mathematics is not a spectator sport!"). His rule of thumb is to can the (sometimes) dozens of trivial problems commonly presented, opting rather for a choice few interesting and challenging ones. I certainly learn better from this approach - perhaps more importantly, I have a lot more fun. Mathematics is for those with unrealistic daring, tempered
by a dedication so extreme as to make the former at worst asymptotically realistic.

a delightful book
By STUDENT
In the main, I find myself agreeing with the earlier reviewer. The paucity of exercises is NOT a weakness of this book. On the contrary, the exercises in the book are carefully chosen and serve to illustrate and reinforce the theory really well. It is really well written: simple and lucid. It is a pity that one must not hold out high hopes for more books on algebra or number theory written by this author who appears to be an analyst. I am grateful for this contribution from him to my mathematical education at any rate.

Very well written, and the exercises are really helpful to learn too. It has an extensive treatment of fields, which is important to understand well before getting to Galois Theory. Strongly recommended!

Weberian Sociological Theory (Cambridge Paperback Library), by Randall Collins

Randall Collins convincingly argues that much of Max Weber's work has been misunderstood, and that many of his most striking and sophisticated theories have been overlooked. By analysing hitherto little known aspects of Weber's writings, Professor Collins is able both to offer a new interpretation of Weberian sociology and to show how the more fruitful lines of the Weberian approach can be projected to an analysis of current world issues. Professor Collins begins with Weber's theory of the rise of capitalism, examining it in the light of Weber's later writings on the subject and extending the Weberian line of reasoning to suggest a 'Weberian revolution' in both medieval Europe and China. He also offers a new interpretation of Weber's theory of politics, showing it to be a 'world-system' model; and he expands this into a theory of geopolitics, using as a particular illustration the prediction of the future decline of Russian world power. Another 'buried treasure' in the corpus is Weber's conflict theory of the family as sex and property, which Professor Collins applies to the historical question of the conditions that led to the initial rise in the status of women. The broad view of Weber's works shows that Weberian sociology remains intellectually alive and that many of his theories still represent the frontier of our knowledge about large-scale social processes.

Still Highly Valuable Weberian Sociological Theory Three Decades Later
By Johannes Bakker
This book was first published in 1986. There has been a great deal of research on Max Weber and theorizing utilizing Weber's insights since then. So why would anyone want to buy this book three decades later? The simple answer is that everything in this book is still relevant to the better comprehension of Max Weber's stimulating approach to sociological theory, history and "political economy." Anyone who wishes to understand the emergence of "modern capitalism" would do well to read as much of Max Weber's work as possible. The collected works (Gesamtausgabe) allow scholars to trace subtle nuances in the changes in Weber's views. But those who do not read German fluently have to rely on other languages. Professor Collins' book is a significant contribution to English-language discussions of Weber. The book is divided into four Parts: Part I: Economics, Part II: Politics, Part III: Culture, and Part IV: "Sex" [the family, the household, marriage politics, status of women, etc.). Cahpter 8 on "The Future Decline of the Russian Empire" predicted many events that took place AFTER 1986. Chapter 2 on "Weber's Last Theory of Capitalism" examines the overall theory of "modern capitalism" and thereby clarifies the importance of not just relying on the essays collected in English as "The Protestant Ethic and the 'Spirit' of ]Modern] Capitalism." Those essays from 1904, 1905 and 1906 are not the final result of Weber's work on capitalism. To some extent they can be considered very stimulating "sketches." Of course, Weber died in 1920, too early to fully predict everything that happened in subsequent years. But if we read Chapter 3 carefully then we have a grasp of what is crucial to modern capitalism as a new form of political, economic and societal structure after the High Middle Ages. The comparison with Buddhist China is very informative. Chapter 9 also returns to the importance of studying religious institutions. Chapter 10 provides a very succinct discussion of the Hegelian background to Marxist and Marxian theory. The sociology of markets is somewhat different from the study of exploitation and what Marx called "surplus value." A review for amazon is not the place to launch into a detailed discussion of every detail. No doubt some readers may not agree with everything that Collins writes. But any relatively well educated reader will find this a very stimulating book and well worth the price. I believe, for example, that the discussion of "The universal church and the imperial state" (pp. 215-221) provides a heuristic clue to the sociological meaning of theological dogma and heresy. Some political Marxists may not like Weber's interpretive, comparative historical sociology. But to even begin to criticize Weber it is necessary to read Collins' brilliant exposition of the implications of his thought. Collins is sometimes labelled a "conflict theorist" and many would argue Weber was not a conflict theorist, but in some ways Professor Collins is a Neo-Weberian thinker who discards some aspects of Weber's thinking and takes up the value of other Weberian ideas by comparing Weber's specific arguments with new subjects that are not specifically addressed in Weber's oeuvre. Of course, Collins himself has written a great deal since 1986. Anyone who reads this book may want to follow up with other work by Collins, some of which is not specifically Weberian or Neo-Weberian. HIs book The Sociology of Philosophies (Belknap) is a magnum opus that goes far further than Weber was able to do because of the wealth of scholarship on Sinitic, Indic and Greek civilizations that has appeared since the 1910s. Modern capitalism is not the only subject discussed in this book, but anyone who is interested in knowing about current trends in the global capitalist political economic system will benefit from having these stimulating chapters as background. Historians like to make derogatory comments about Weber, usually just in a footnote. But often academic historians do not really read Weber's oeuvre and have no clear idea of the heuristic value of Weber's ideal type analysis. Read this book.

Revolution and Rebellion: State and Society in England in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, by J. C. D. Clark

This iconoclastic and satirical book provides a radical reconstruction of the recent historiography of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It creates an alliance between those revisionist historians who have rewritten the received account of the origins of the English Civil War and those historians who have been rethinking the Hanoverian era. Revolution and Rebellion is thus a companion volume to the author's English Society 1688-1832. The book counters the Marxist interpretation of the 1640s and the 'English Revolution' by developing our new understanding of the non-revolutionary nature of the world after 1660: it challenges the appropriateness of 'revolution' as a description of events like those of 1688, 1715, 1745, the American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution or the Reform Bill, drawing attention instead to the idea of 'rebellion'. This is the first book so to link English history in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and it will be required reading for students and teachers of both eras.

Culture Theory: Essays on Mind, Self and EmotionFrom Cambridge University Press

The relationship between everyday experience and culture - seen as a set of ideas, values, or symbolic codes - has challenged social scientists and especially anthropologists, for more than a century. As a comprehensive and critical account of knowledge and research in the field of culture theory, leading social scientists explore the implications for understanding different aspects of subjective experience, social practice, and individual behavior. The focus of the volume is on the role of symbols and meaning in the development of mind, self, and emotion. They examine the content of culture and how it interacts with cognitive, social, and emotional growth; how ideas relate to attitudes, feelings, and behavior; how concepts and meanings are historically transmitted. They also explore methodological and conceptual problems involved in the definition and study of meaning, and revisit the perennial problem of 'relativism' in light of topical advances in semantic analysis and in culture theory. This book will appeal to an interdisciplinary audience of anthropologists, psychologists, philosophers, historians, and linguists, as well as those interested in hermeneutics and a science of subjectivity.

"This is a wonderful piece of scholarship...No anthropological linguist planning work in South Asia should leave home without it." American Anthropologist

"...Masica's text is a valuable addition to the Indo-Europeanist's library and is a must for Aryan studies. It is destined to become a classic." Jacob Caflisch, Sr., Language Quarterly

"...Dr. Masica is to be congratulated on assembling and organizing so much material, much of it little known, with the clarity and accuracy he has done and in maintaining the identifiable perspective of a single scholar on it....This very fine book will be much used and will not easily be replaced as a guide to the structure, modes of functioning, evolving interrelationships, and unresolved complexities of its varied subject-matter." Journal of the American Oriental Society

"...a genuine monument of erudition....Dr. Masica is remarkably conversant with all the available information and he digests it exceedingly well for the non-specialist and for the scholar as well....The volume is completed by rich appendices, copious notes and indices, as well as a very detailed bibliography. Clear tables illustrate the discussion." Journal of Indo-European Studies

Detailed
By Truman Templeton
Masica does a decent job of what is obviously a difficult task of organizing the Indo-Aryan languages and reviewing them both synchronically and diachronically. He does review the languages using historical linguistics to trace language change from Sanskrit/Old Indo-Aryan thru Pali and the various Prakrits to the Modern Indo-Aryan languages.
However my primary fault with this book is that it doesn't read as easily as other Cambridge Language Surveys like The Dravidian Languages by Krishnamurti or The Slavic Languages by Sussex and Cubberley. He offers a chart showing the first person singular and plural pronouns but little reference to the 2nd person pronouns. More summaries showing the details of each language or language groups and their respective dialects and sample texts would have been helpful. Also he switches back and forth from one transcription system for Kashmiri to another and its difficult to track which is which. A little more organization would have increased its accessibility.

The editors list as one of their principles for rendering Kant's difficult German into English: "Our translators try to avoid sacrificing literalness to readability." Their notion of literalness is simply this: if one of Kant's sentences has five subordinate clauses, the English version should have five subordinate clauses. They obtusely fail to consider that German has grammatical markers that English does not have (e.g., gender of nouns and pronouns). Hence while Kant's German sentence might have a pronoun separated from its noun by some distance, gender will indicate the appropriate reference. In English, the referent for a pronoun is usally the noun most proximate--thus their introduction of great ambiguity into the English that does not exist in the German. The translators also presume that the only way to preserve Kant's argumentative structure is by adhering to his complex surface structure. But the logical grammar of Kant's arguments is obscured in English by the sacrifice of readability to their notion of literalness. Werner Pluhar has a better translation.

Aesthetics, Teleology, and Kant
By FrKurt Messick
This book, the 'Critique of Judgement', is the third volume in Immanuel Kant's Critique project, which began with 'Critique of Pure Reason' and continued in 'Critique of Practical Reason'. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is considered one of the giants of philosophy, of his age or any other. It is largely this book that provides the foundation of this assessment. Whether one loves Kant or hates him (philosophically, that is), one cannot really ignore him; even when one isn't directly dealing with Kantian ideas, chances are great that Kant is made an impact.

Kant was a professor of philosophy in the German city of Konigsberg, where he spent his entire life and career. Kant had a very organised and clockwork life - his habits were so regular that it was considered that the people of Konigsberg could set their clocks by his walks. The same regularity was part of his publication history, until 1770, when Kant had a ten-year hiatus in publishing. This was largely because he was working on this book, the 'Critique of Pure Reason'.

Kant as a professor of philosophy was familiar with the Rationalists, such as Descartes, who founded the Enlightenment and in many ways started the phenomenon of modern philosophy. He was also familiar with the Empiricist school (John Locke and David Hume are perhaps the best known names in this), which challenged the rationalist framework. Between Leibniz' monads and Hume's development of Empiricism to its logical (and self-destructive) conclusion, coupled with the Romantic ideals typified by Rousseau, the philosophical edifice of the Enlightenment seemed about to topple.

This book is divided into two major sections, the Critique of Aesthetic Judgement, and the Critique of Teleological Judgement. In the part on Aesthetics, Kant sets up for possible judgements - agreeable, good, sublime and beautiful. This relates back to the 'Critique of Pure Reason' (and scholar J.H. Bernard indicates that this framework is sometimes a bit of a shackle placed on Kant). Those things that are agreeable are wholly sensory in character, whereas those things that are good are ethical in nature. Kant argues that those things that are beautiful and sublime fall between the two poles of 'agreeable' and 'good'. Beauty is involved in purpose (teleology), whereas sublimity is that which goes beyond comprehension (and can be an object of fear). This also involves an idea of mind that allows for genius and creative activity.

In the section on teleology, this is a way of looking at things based on their ends (telos), and links to aesthetics in terms of beauty (which has a sense of finality of form) as well as links to scientific purposes - Kant particularly is concerned to explore biology and the telos of the natural world. This also involves physics and logical principles, bringing Kant full circle back to some of the ideas from the 'Critique of Pure Reason'.

This is one of Kant's master works, and while there is much that modern philosophers disagree with, there is also the sense in which no subsequent philosophy can ignore the developments and implications of Kant's Critique project.

A fine edition
By Marcus Verhaegh
The placement of the First Introduction at the beginning of the book is very useful, providing a different feel as to the nature of the work as a whole. The relative of lack of [bracketed] comments compared to the Pluhar edition is also a plus.

Review
"Paul Guyer's and Allen Wood's new translation of Kant's Critique is a superb volume that forms the heart of Cambridge's excellent series of translations of Kant's works. Because of the quality of the translation, but also because of the various supplementary materials which it provides...it will very likely replace Norman Kemp Smith's translation as the standard edition for scholars. It is difficult to imagine that anyone would be able to improve on this volume in the foreseeable future." Eric Watkins, International Philosophical Quarterly

If it were easy, you'd read it in grade school
By Philip Sandifer
Let me start by addressing some misconceptions you'll see as you roam around these reviews.
First of all, there are a couple of low reviews that refer to Kant as being "anti-reason," "anti-truth," a socialist, a collectivist, etc. These are written by Objectivists - followers of Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand has about the same relationship to serious philosophy as McDonalds does to good cooking. She hated Kant, but never quite seemed to understand him. No surprise - he's hard.
Which is the second point. This is not an easy book at all. That's why it's most often assigned to graduate students. Even undergrads can easily get a philosophy degree without ever touching this book. It's bloody hard. This is because, well, its ideas are radical and difficult, and because Kant is a careful philosopher.
It is not, and this is my third point, because Kant is a bad writer. Quite the opposite. He's a great writer. The fact of the matter is, though, that his subject matter is not exactly a page-turner. But, I mean, what do you expect. You're reading academic philosophy. There's a handful of academic books that are both worthwhile and fun to read, and that's just a fact of life. Kant, however, is quite clear - indeed, he does the service of going over his points more than once - a luxury you won't get when you advance to Hegel. Furthermore, believe it or not, there are jokes in Kant. The best of them is a footnote, in which he notes that "Deficiancy in judgment is that which is ordinarily referred to as stupidity, and for such a failing their is no remedy."
Unfortunately, it's all too common on Amazon to bash academic books because they're hard, obscure, or poorly written. The fact of the matter is that these books are not for everyone. They're for specialists and scholars, and are written in a language that is appropriately technical to that task. You don't go and bash medical and scientific books for being too hard for you. Give philosophy a break, and recognize this book as what it is - one of the most important contributions to a scholarly field ever.

Standard translation of landmark text
By Penn Jacobs
Note: this is the edition I'm familiar with, but it's out of print. There are new editions (both with this translation and newer ones) that would be worth checking out. This one has no real guide or preface, but I kind of like that.

Norman Kemp Smith's translation seems to be one of the standard English translations of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Is it the best? I don't speak German, but it's certainly serviceable.

This is a daunting work. It's also a necessary work, inasmuch as any understand of contemporary thought and intellectual history must encounter it. Kant has influenced nearly every major school of thought and cultural trend for the last 200 years. Below, I'll try to sketch his thought in this Critique.

This is the story of Immanuel Kant, who found philosophy a mess and sought to fix it. Specifically, he was a former Rationalist who was disconcerted by the critique of British Empiricism (specifically the skeptical philosophy of David Hume). He sought to provide a grounding for the truths of empirical science and mathematics, establish the possibility of religious faith and practice, while at the same time avoid dogmatism in metaphysical reasoning.

How did he seek to do this? By establishing a critique of reason whereby he understands the validity of all mental constructs. Kant distinguish between judgments which are a priori (prior to experience) and a posteriori (arising out of experience), and judgments which are "analytic" (trivial, tautological) and "synthetic" (where the predicate adds something that is not contained within the subject). Are synthetic a priori judgments possible? Kant answers yes, and much of this book deals with what follows from that.

First Kant deals with how we have sense experience. He claims that space and time are necessary a priori conditions for sense experience -- not physical things in the world. The content of our experience is sense-data: raw sensation that arises outside ourselves or inside ourselves and is "given" in experience. The forms in which we construct that experience are space and time.

Sensations, organized within us spatially and temporally yields sense experience (perceptions).

Kant then proceeds to our abstract thought. What he terms "Understanding" has pure, a priori concepts according to logical form. He calls these "Categories." These do NOT arise as a mere empirical habit/convention -- they are prior to experience and are necessary forms that allow rational beings to experience the world intelligibly. Thus, we take the raw givens of our Understanding, which are perceptions (which we dealt with under "Transcendental Aesthetic"), and we impose the categories upon these perceptions -- we "schematize" our experience.

Perceptions, given intelligible form according to schemata, yield intelligible concepts. We are justified in doing this because the perceptions are not things-in-themselves, but mere appearances (phenomena), and in order for these phenomena to exist in an experience that is coherent and consistent for us, they must have these forms. We are NOT justified in applying these categories to things-in-themselves (noumena).

This is where Reason eats itself. It tries to do the same thing the understanding did, but now it does this with respect to the big metaphysical questions. It starts with concepts and attempts to unify all phenomenal experience according to concepts and yield the Ideas of Pure Reason. When it does this, it gets all confuzelled. It tries to deal with 3 Big Problems (Kant uses the term "dialectic"):

* Soul - Reason wants to insist that the thinking soul exists, that it is subject (pure substance), that it is simple, and that it is unchangeable through all its activities. These are the Paralogisms of Pure Reason. We need these ideas -- their contraries are unthinkable for us(?), but these are not demonstrable.

* The World - Reason wants to answer questions about the series of appearances that constitute the world: Is the World limited or unlimited in space and time? Is the world made up of simples or composites? Does freedom exist in the world? Is there a necessary being connected with the world? These are the Antinomies of Pure Reason. Unlike the Paralogisms, these questions admit of contradictory answers. They, too, cannot be adjudicated by pure reason.

* God - Reason wants to demonstrate the existence of God. Kant refers to this as the Ideal of Pure Reason. He claims that all arguments demonstating God's existence in fact, despite outward appearances, depend upon one method, the "ontological" proof of God's existence, which Kant disallows as transempirical.

Kant tries to tell us how to employ reason. First, stop arguing speculatively about God, etc.! But he urges us to apply those metaphysical ideas must be employed in practical (moral) contexts. In this, he anticipates the Victorians, who were somewhat skeptical on matters of faith, but stressed the necessity of continuing to act according to traditional morality. The dialectic problems deals with ideas are not verifiable speculatively. They are not constitutive of experience. Rather, they serve a regulative function, specifically in the practical realm of morality.

Kant claims that reason is architectonic: it naturally wants to assume the greatest generality. Kant says this is fine for moral thinking, but bad for speculative thinking.

Kant says that philosophy answers these questions: "What can I know? What ought I to do? What may I hope for?" The bulk of Critique of Pure Reason answers the first question. The Critique of Practical Reason, Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals, Metaphysic of Morals, etc., answer the second question. The third question ties the two together -- this is what Kant deals with at the end of the first Critique.

Kant sees the great transendental ideas as being God, Immortality, and Freedom. They are the starting points of theistic religion (e.g. Christianity and Judaism). These can neither be verified nor disproved by speculative reason (since speculative reason must by its nature deal with givens (Latin, data) either from sense-experience or pure intuition (as in mathematics). These ideas, however, are necessary "regulative" ideas for the guidance of practical (moral reason) and are valid in that connection. Thus, the second Critique answers the question "What ought I to do?" by recourse to the transcendal idea of Freedom. The question, "what may I hope for?", is given response through the transcendental ideas of God and immortality, for if God does not exist, nothing can grant us happiness for moral behavior and unhappiness for immoral behavior, and if we're not immortal, God won't have anyone to reward.

I probably have made errors and inaccuracies in the above, but I hope I give a flavor for his thought. Kant is sober, earnest, and disciplined. Again, he's not easy, but I think he's worth the effort.

A superb translation in modern English
By Seesaw-Books
Mr Werner S. Pluhar has done us all non-German readers a great favor:

A clear, complete (with a German-English Glossary followed by the English-German Index), fluent translation of Kant's major work.

It's the one I feel to be the most enjoyable and closer to the original.

Patricia Kitcher's Introduction is very helpful to any new Kant's reader.

The editing and format of this edition is well designed and inviting to

the eye.

Beyond the Mechanical Universe: From Electricity to Modern Physics, by Richard P. Olenick, Tom M. Apostol, David L. Goodstein

This second volume of the Mechanical Universe studies electricity and magnetism, their relation to each other and light, and shows how the problem of light led to the special theory of relativity. Then, it moves on to modern physics, where particles may behave like waves and where some of the great verities of Newtonian physics appear less certain. Along with the first volume, this book is based on, though independent of, a public television series broadcast in the United States. Physics is presented as a human endeavor, with historical development forming a thread throughout the text. The prerequisites are minimal, only basic algebra and trigonometry since the necessary calculus is developed in the text, with physics providing the motivation. New concepts are introduced at the natural, logical point with many historical references to place physics in a social perspective. Many topics from twentieth-century physics are included. The book is attractively illustrated and will be a stimulating alternative to other, less-thorough treatments.

Review
"Olenick (U. of Dallas), Apostol (California Institute of Technology) and Goodstein (California Institute of Technology) have produced this textbook on electricity and magnetism, and how the relationship between these two forces led to the Theory of Relativity. Written primarily for physics and engineering students, the authors have emphasized the human aspects of understanding physics so that only a basic knowledge of algebra and trigonometry is needed to explore the mathematical applications of the text. As a result, these foundations of modern physics can also be enjoyed from a historical aspect and will appeal to many students from other disciplines who desire a more in-depth knowledge of the world around them."
Book News, Inc.

"The material in this textbook is presented in a clear and readable manner. A multitude of diagrams aid student understanding as does the abundance of problems, to such an extent that although based on the Mechanical Universe television series, this volume can act as an independent resource."

a good elementary book on electricity and magnetism
By Chee Lim Cheung
This is an elementary text on electricity and magnetism with some chapters on special relativity and modern physics. It is manifestly written for college students and has a strong historical bent. The explanations and discussions are very clear and the mathematical derivations are given in detail. This book is highly recommended for novice students who are studying electricity and magnetism. It is also very suitable for self-study.

very good for 2nd semester freshman physics (calculus-based)
By A.Reader1
Like its younger brother ("The Mechanical Universe") this "Beyond The Mechanical Universe" book is excellent. It's intended for first year university physics courses which use calculus. It covers the typical second semester topics. However, it's more advanced than the first book and could have used a chapter or two on line and surface integrals.

It does have one major shortcoming - only 1 chapter is devoted to light & optics. Neither this book nor its predecessor covers sound at all.

Another excellent book is "Understanding Physics", 2nd edition by Michael Mansfield & Colm O'Sullivan. See my review. It covers more topics than these Mechanical Universe books by Olenick et al.
