He discusses the alternative objectives and alternative decision modes that are available to societies. Objectives such as efficiency, growth, liberty and equality--while themselves desirable--frequently involve trade-offs; the more complete attainment of any one objective may involve the partial sacrifice of another. In pursuit of its objectives, each society uses a combination of decision modes. Professor Conklin examines six of these: free enterprise, price controls, subsidies, taxation, non-price regulations, and public enterprise. He ends with a discussion of the processes societies use to make the necessary decisions between the available objectives and decision modes.

About the Author
David W. Conklin is James D. Fleck Professor in International Business and a Professor of the Global Environment of Business area group at Richard Ivey School of Business. In addition he is President, Conklin and Associates, Inc., a company which undertakes research and consulting activities for private corporations and government departments and agencies on public policy issues. He has also taught in the Economics and Political Science Departments at UWO, and has been an Adjunct Professor in Social Science. He earned a BA in political science and economics from the University of Toronto and a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Conklin's research work focuses on the interface between corporations and public policies. This includes work for governments in the design and enforcement of legislation and regulations, as well as consulting for corporations in influencing public policies and in complying with government legislation and regulations. He has been Director, UWO Office of the Institute for Research on Public Policy, and Director of the University of Western Ontario Centre for American Studies. Over the past fifteen years, he has published over 50 articles and over 30 books.

Following a detailed analysis of the history of the question, Reverend Ford argues that a human individual could not begin before definitive individuation occurs with the appearance of the primitive streak about two weeks after fertilization. This, he argues, is when it becomes finally known whether one or more human individuals are to form from a single egg. Thus, he questions the idea that the fertilized egg itself could be regarded as the beginning of the development of the human individual. The author also differs sharply, however, from those who would delay the beginning of the human person until the brain is formed, or until birth or the onset of conscious states.

Good Metaphysics, Questionable Embryology

I first read Ford's book and was fascinated by his argument. I found his utilization of Thomistic metaphysics convincing and inspiring as he negotiated a middle course between the traditional Church teaching and the performance theories of those such as Peter Singer. However, despite my clinging belief that Ford's metaphysical analysis is sound. I have encountered enough critiques of his embryological analysis to call his overall conclusions into question. I think this book is still a thought-provoking read for those interested in tackling the subject of the origin of the human person. However, Ford's metaphysical analysis is only as good as the science to which he applies it. Caution is warranted.

The authors re-examine such concepts as 'a language', 'correct usage', 'race' and 'ethnic groups' and clearly reveal the complex role of language in establishing relationships within regional and social communities and at the state or national level.

Let me recommend this book to you, if you are interested in soil mechanics, numerical modelling, and if you try to understand soils well.
Critical states soil mechanics is a popular framework for the recent developement of many soil constitutive models. This book is a step by step exploration of this framework, especially Modified Cam Clay model, both conceptually and numerically. The stress-strain-strength behaviors of cohesive and cohesionless soils under drained or undrained condition can be quantitively determined using this simple model. More sophisticated models in the current research front, for example, MIT S2 model, bounding surface models, are all shadowed within critical state concepts.
Overall, it is a book about a very useful elasto-plastic soil mechanics model. It uses some fundamentals of elasticity and plasticity. You may meet a little bit mathematics there, but that is almost trivial compared with that used in solid mechanics and theory of plasticity.

A good but tough book

This is a judiciously crafted book. It is not bogged down by advanced mathematics of continuum mechanics and plasticity theory. But this should not deceive one into believing that it will be an easy reading throughout. Perhaps the converse is true. Verbal explanation as the basic method instead of mathematics in conveying ideas, surely has its advantages. But it contains lots of difficulties as well. It requires tremendous effort on the part of the author to achieve the understanding of the reader. This care and effort is, understandably, provided rather rarely , especially by the masters. This book also is not an exception in this respect. Surely the author knows very well what he intends to convey. But at many places, the explanations are loose and the wording is not careful enough. Consequently it is highly disputable whether the image of understanding in the readers brain coincides with the authors intention.
In arriving to formulas and results, the intermediate steps are almost always omitted. This might be good to keep the volume at a modest level. But here it is to a degree that one sometimes get the impression and annoyance of coming into face to face with something simply out of hat. Of course also the readers orientation and habits might play the decisive role in this regard. So if you are fond of some logical following and rigor, then you must be well prepared to beat your brains out in reading this book. I have derived and completed every single missing step until reaching "Rowe's stress- dilatancy relation" in chapter 8. And at this point I have given up flat.
All in all, a good but tough book to gain some really useful insight into soil behavior. One of the best in critical soil mechanics where scarcity is prominent. Sincere thanks are due to the author for his painstaking and efforts.

A fine book on the origins of modern compulsory school.

This is a fine book. Meticulously researched and referenced. My interest in the history of education arises out of the fact that I don't intend to send my daughter to school choosing instead to educate her at home. One reason I'm doing this is that mainstream school, whether state or private, is not primarily about education but about structuring society to create a class system and about mentally programming its participants into some role within society. That's quite a bold statement to make and I made it after only a little research. While I might be totally convinced of it, I have be aware that it might be wrong since my daughter's future is at stake. Hence my desire for further research, a desire most ably satisfied by this book. If you read Melton's book you will be left in no doubt as to the veracity of the statement. Also in the book you will find described most of the mind control and indoctrination methods that we associate with modern school and which in alternative education circles is known as the hidden curriculum.
For me a major benefit of this book is that it is written by someone not involved in the alternative education movement, someone who has probably never heard of us or read any of our material. In 'Absolutism', Melton offers independent verification of some of the ideas circulating among an otherwise small group of people. Melton agrees that Prussia is where the origins of compulsory modern schooling lie, but whereas the movement customarily places them in the Prussia after the battle of Jena round about 1805, after Fichte's addresses to the German nation, Melton has them in the Prussia of the early 1700s with methods under the direction of one August Hermann Franke. A piffling discrepancy you may think which makes no difference to the children with lives blighted by school, but all the difference in the world when analysing the philosophical roots of compulsory school. It should also makes a difference when considering reforms to school or its abolition. With Melton's work we can now make a small but significant correction and state that the origins of the education systems in most countries of the world are attributable to Christian Pietists under contract to the Prussian State. Before, the origins were customarily attributed to solely the Prussian State with the silent implication that the origins are secular.
There is much more in this book. As well as home educators, practitioners of alternative education and education historians, this book will appeal to people interested in other aspects of the history and in the politics, philosophy, and religion of eighteenth century Prussia and Austria. In it you will read about Cameralists, the textile industry, labour shortages, seigniorial authority, the rise of agrarian capitalism and much more. Chapter 3 deals with things like baroque Catholicism, popular comedy and drama, and literate theatre - stretching the relevance to add a bit of colour I suspect but good fun nonetheless.
Be warned though, this book is not a primer. You will need to have some prior familiarity with the material to derive maximum value from 'Absolutism'.

Clarrifying Prussian Influence on Public Education

I am the founder of a charter school in Michigan. Before deciding to found such a school, I read voluminous texts about the history and purposes of public education. This is, by far, my favorite text on education history.
Most education historians make the mistake of blindly accepting as a premise the common misconception that the intended purpose for the development of compulsory education in Prussia was the mass production of soldiers and obedient subjects. Research proves this to be utterly false. While certainly it cannot be argued that the training of the young has been misused at points in history by tyrants, including Hitler, you can't label an invention by its misuse. All innovations have the inherent danger of perversion for evil purpose.
Compulsory public education has a very interesting and wholesome history. The research of Melton sheds much needed light on the perpetually maligned history of compulsory education. This is a must read for those wishing to learn the intricate truth of the evolution of Prussian/Austrian systems of education. The revelations of this probing research succesfully challenge the commonly held prejudices regarding state-run educational systems.

Yes, Marx is still relevant in the 21st century

An interesting book, taking, as its title suggests, an analytical approach to Marxist ideas. Since there is no sense of sola scriptura among Marxists, every idea and assumption is open to critique (more so, even then among capitalists, for whom profit is an unquestionable Good). Tools such as game theory help bring Marxist ideas into better focus. Interestingly, many of the authors reach contradictory conclusions. As is all-to-common among contemporary social scientists, there is a tendency to obfuscate the prose with needless mathematics, but there is still quite a bit to be learned here.
