The Pseudepigrapha are a collection of several dozen scriptures, generally Jewish ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE, that did not make the cut, that is, did not get included in the Old Testament, Apochrypha or New Testament (NT). The Pseudoepigrapha reflect doctrines and preoccupations of various sects, that is, they are not consistent with each other as, say, the books of the New Testament are consistent with each other. The Pseudepigrapha have separate textual histories and have survived in diverse manuscripts and languages, including Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopic, Greek, Latin, and Slavonic. In two other volumes, James Charlesworth has assembled translations of the Pseudepigrapha. (In this year, 2001, Amazon is selling those two volumes for $40 each.)

"The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha & the New Testament" looks like it might have been an aborted introduction to that two-volume edition. Charlesworth addresses his discussion to serious biblical scholars to explain exactly how the Pseudepigrapha should and should not be used. For example, late in the book he takes several pages explaining the Pseudepigrapha's evidence that Hebrews and James in the NT could have been composed before 70 CE, not after 80 CE as previously thought.

I have read this book and see why another reviewer complained that it was too slow to draw conclusions based on the evidence of the Pseudepigrapha. But what kind of conclusions do we crave? Pop science shows on TV tend to pander to our appetite for the sensational, but Charlesworth does not waste time debunking Revelation or revealing startling new evidence about the youth of Jesus.

The book is concerned with the minutia of linguistic and textual hermeneutics that the casual reader would simply not care about but the specialist and scholar would. I give it four stars because it is good for that narrow audience. Everyone else should first get better acquainted with the Bible.

only an introduction

Dr. Charlesworth's most recent book on the Pseudepigrapha is short (about 100 pages) and is a great introduction, but it also leaves more to be desired. What Dr. Charlesworth shows is that yes, there are a number of parallels between the Pseudepigrapha and the New Testament. But, what I was hoping to find in this book was a more thorough analysis of what these parallels might mean for the New Testament. If the authors really were aware of these extra-canonical texts (assuming that they really were extra-canonical) and were actually influenced by them, then do any of the NT writings take on new meaning? Do they take on different meanings? How could they enhance one's understanding of a particular text? Or, can they shed any light on the New Testament at all?
Again, this book is a great introduction to the Pseudepigrapha. But, it only begins to shed light on their relationship(s) to the New Testament and leaves the reader hoping that some time soon, someone will come along and dispell much of the remaining darkness.

This book analyzes the relationship between Peronism and the Argentine working class from the foundation of the Peronist movement in the mid 1940s to the overthrow of Peron's widow in 1976. It presents an account of such crucial issues as the role of the Peronist union bureaucracy and the impact of the Peronist ideology on workers. Drawing on a variety of untapped sources, Daniel James confronts many of the dominant myths that have surrounded the movement. He argues that its role in containing working-class militancy cannot be explained solely in terms of manipulation, corruption, or union gangsterism.

Blurring the line between Unions and the National State

Peronism managed to control the Union movement in Argentina. Working from the national state, Perón moved to legalize long-sought rights of Argentine workers (like paid yearly vacations). He also took the time to crush or isolate any dissent with him within the Union movement. And guaranteed to the Union "bosses" some privileges (like having only one Union legalized for each kind of workers).
The book tells the story.

About the Author
G. Tyler Miller has written 62 textbooks for introductory courses in environmental science, basic ecology, energy, and environmental chemistry. Since 1975, Miller's books have been the most widely used textbooks for environmental science in the United States and throughout the world. They have been used by almost three million students and have been translated into eight languages. Miller has a professional background in chemistry, physics, and ecology. He has a PhD from the University of Virginia and has received two honorary doctoral degrees for his contributions to environmental education. He taught college for 20 years, developed one of the nation's first environmental studies programs, and developed an innovative interdisciplinary undergraduate science program before deciding to write environmental science textbooks full time in 1975. Currently, he is the president of Earth Education and Research, which is devoted to improving environmental education.

This innovative physics textbook intended for science and engineering majors develops classical mechanics from a historical perspective. The presentation of the standard course material includes a discussion of the thought processes of the discoverers and a description of the methods by which they arrived at their theories. However the presentation proceeds logically rather than strictly chronologically, so new concepts are introduced at the natural moment.
The book assumes a familiarity with calculus, includes a discussion of rigid body motion, and contains numerous thought-provoking problems. It is largely based in content on The Mechanical Universe: Introduction to Mechanics and Heat, a book designed in conjunction with a tele-course to be offered by PBS in the Fall of 1985. The advanced edition, however, does not coincide exactly with the video lessons, contains additional material, and develops the fundamental ideas introduced in the lower-level edition to a greater degree. -- Book Description

About the Author
Richard P. Olenick is currently the chair of Department of Physics at University of Dallas. He was Associate Project Director of the PBS Series The Mechanical Universe and Beyond the Mechanical Universe, which accompanied this textbook and its successors. He has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation and the US Department of Education for his work in physics education. His current project is C3P, which developed an inquiry-based curriculum for high school physics. In 1995, Dr Olenick was named Texas Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation and in 1997, he was named a Minnie Piper Steven Professor. In 2003, he became the Nancy Cain Marcus and Jeffrey A. Marcus Chair in Science and in 2005 he received the King Award from the University of Dallas, which is the highest honor the University can bestow on a faculty member.

Tom M. Apostol joined the California Institute of Technology faculty in 1950 and is now Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus. He is internationally known for his textbooks on Calculus, Analysis, and Analytic Number Theory, which have been translated into 5 languages, and for creating Project MATHEMATICS!, a series of video programs that bring mathematics to life with computer animation, live action, music, and special effects. The videos have won first-place honors at a dozen international video festivals, and have been translated into Hebrew, Portuguese, French, and Spanish. His list of publications includes 98 research papers, 46 of them published since he retired in 1992. He has received several awards for his research and teaching. In 1978 he was a visiting professor at the University of Patras in Greece, and in 2000 was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens, where he delivered his inaugural lecture in Greek.

Dr David L. Goodstein is Vice Provost and Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology, where he has been on the faculty for over 35 years. In 1995, he was named the Frank J. Gilloon Distinguished Teaching and Service Professor. In 1999, Dr Goodstein was awarded the Oersted Medal of the American Association of Physics Teachers, and in 2000, the John P. McGovern Medal of the Sigma Xi Society. He has served on and chaired numerous scientific and academic panels, including the National Advisory Committee to the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate of the National Science Foundation. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the California Council on Science and Technology. His books include States of Matter and Feynman's Lost Lecture, written with his wife, Dr Judith Goodstein. In the 1980's, he was Director and host of The Mechanical Universe television program which has been viewed by millions.

An clear presentation of mechanics

I saw the excellent Mechanical Universe Television series while I was in high school and I recently purchased this book. I've just finished reading this book and am simultaneously doing problems in Schaum 3000 Physics problems. This is a great reader to use as it puts the physics in the historical context and traces the reasoning these great scientists used in inducing their conclusions in the first place. The explanations are mostly very clear. Some of the historical interpretations are questionable but they do not detract from the overall value of the historical approach. This is how all physics should be taught.

A Marvelous and Timeless Intro to Physics (and Calculus)

This book may be older than my college-age daughter, but it's still one of the best introductions to elementary physics that you'll find anywhere. Marvelously readable, the authors do a wonderful job of interweaving historical context for the development of the ideas with lucid explanations of the modern understanding.

Be aware that calculus is sprinkled liberally throughout. Fortunately, the authors introduce and explain the calculus they use, and they do it in a way that is not only easy and painless; you actually begin to see why modern physics would not be possible without calculus.

With its highly readable explanations and historical perpective, this book might make a good back-up text for a college student taking Intro Physics. It's also suitable as the backbone of an advanced high school course where the instructor desires to incorporate calculus. In fact, there was a TV series that closely follows the text, minus the calculus, and is targeted at high school students. You can still find it on DVD and VHS (although not from Amazon) but you'll pay $450 to $500 for all 26 (maybe 28?) hours.

Finally, it's perfect if you (like me) went to school too many years ago and would just like to refresh your knowledge of the subject. I know a lot of amateur astronomers who fit in that category! As a bonus, you get a refresher course in calculus along the way.

Note that there is a second volume that dives into electromagnetism as well as quantum mechanics at the same introductory level. There is also an "advanced" version of this book that I have not looked at. Judging from the table of contents, however, it appears to be the same basic material slightly re-organized.

The Poverty of Mr. Obama's Imagination?

Professor Unger's first four books can be said to constitute a set -- with the first one, "Knowledge and Politics," setting the predicates for the others. The second book, co-authored with Unger's Harvard colleague at the time, Professor Cornel West, is the only oddball or non-theoretical one of the lot. However, that book is profoundly useful as it sets forth the pragmatic and more programmatic aspects of Unger's and West's shared social theory. I have reviewed that book elsewhere on Amazon as well as posted the review on opednews.com. I highly recommend it to readers who do not wish to delve into the theoretical complexities that typically characterize Professor Unger's books.

It is worth noting in passing too that Unger has written at least one postscript to his first book which attempts to amend his earlier thinking in rather fundamental ways. For me at least, it was difficult to incorporate these updates without lost of continuity in the theory as I understood it, so in the analysis below, I have acted as though those updates had never been made.

Now to the review:

Professor Unger believes that we must accept as a given (what to him has always been all too obvious): that society is a man-made artifact. Nothing more, nothing less. As much as we tend to act otherwise, nothing about society is an expression of some underlying immutable natural order. In fact, it is precisely this artifactual character of society that allowed the modern democratic project to come into being in the first place. And, equally, it has been our misreading of what the basis of society is that has caused that project to veer off it's tracks.

The author's only concern in this piece is that we take this premise at face value and do not shy away from the enormous consequences it has for our lives. Rather than proceed through life as if emancipation, liberalism, socialism and Marxism, among many others, are governed by some immutable near-mathematical laws and by unchangeable historical hierarchies, why do we not proceed both in life and in social theory as if they and their related institutions are what they really are: self-fashioned social experiments? Indeed, why do we continue to live under the contingent weight of a false psychological necessity anyway?

It must be said then that this book thus is mostly a didactic exercise. One that gives us the required split view of: (1) how the confusion wrought by this false ambiguity about the meaning of society gets played out (as the havoc we now understand it to be), compared with (2) how it would be without living in the false bubble of self-imposed psychological necessity. The author's challenge to us is to take at face value the conception of "society as an artifact" and play it to the hilt. If we fail to do so, it means we are only using our social categories and knowledge as a self-fashioning rope for hanging ourselves. To use the author's own metaphor: it becomes a virtual prison-house of circular and oppressive ideas. On the one hand we have a society governed by a tight net of top-down ideas that define its structures, it's hierarchies, it's institutions, it's politics, and even our own identities. This self-fashioned societal strait jacket is little more than entrenched top-down interests and power given expression by other means, i.e., through seemingly immutable social laws. When we remove the blinders and pull back the curtain of false necessity, and then accept society at its most fundamental level for what it is: man-made imagined communities, we open up on the other side a whole new world that is free, vibrant and full of possibilities. It is the first more rigid conception of our social world that has caused the democratic project to veer off track. It is now time to use the second conception to bring it back into proper alignment with the reality of our existence.

Again, as he did in his first book, Unger builds his own logic-deductive philosophical machinery to make and prove these points. And while I can see considerable academic value in this, my only comment is that given the soft nature of social data and concepts, it is inevitable that such an approach sooner or later will run up against this softness and the metaphysical nature of social science propositions, and thus will end up in a metaphysical mess of one sort or another.

I will leave a proper analysis of the details of his theory for another time. After all, I embarked on this journey to get a better handle on why he had made the comment that Mr. Obama was an enemy to progressive causes. From what I have gotten so far, I think I now understand why he made that comment.

One can view Professor Unger's criticism of Mr. Obama (one of his Harvard law students), in several ways. One is that Mr. Obama has simply become a tool of the entrenched oligarchic interests that operate the false psychology of necessity and that sees society as being a mere reflection and extension of those same top-down interests.

Another is to see Mr. Obama as being a leader of such profoundly limited imagination that he is unable to see that success for our troubled democracy lies not in more imitation of the Republican notion of turning the country over to the "job creators' agenda of more tax breaks for the rich," but getting beyond the curtains regulated by entrenched top-down interests altogether, to the other side where imagination and our real freedoms lie. In either case, I think we get the message without having to wade through the details of Professor Unger's rather complex theories. Five Stars.
