Learning How to Ask: A Sociolinguistic Appraisal of the Role of the Interview in Social Science Research (Studies in the Social and Cultura

Interviews are ubiquitous in modern society, and they play a crucial role in social scientific research. But, as Charles Briggs convincingly argues in this book, received interviewing techniques rest on fundamental misapprehensions about the nature both of the interview as a communicative event, and of the nature of the data that it produces. Furthermore, interviewers rarely examine the compatibility of interviews as a means of acquiring information to one another. These oversights often blind interviewers to ensuing errors of interpretation, as well as to the limitations of the interview as a means of acquiring data. To conflict these problems, Professor Briggs presents an analysis of the 'communicative blunders' that he himself committed in conducting research interviews among Spanish-speakers in northern New Mexico. By focusing on these errors and exploring how they may be avoided, he is able to propose new techniques for designing, implementing, and analyzing interview-based research. These rest on identifying the subjects' resources for conveying information, and the relative compatability of the shared rules and understandings that underlie their strategies with those associated with interviews. Critical of existing paradigms of interviewing, which he sees as deriving from Western 'folk' theories of reality and communication, Briggs shows that the development of more sophisticated interviewing methodologies requires further research into interviewing itself. Briggs's conclusions provide a basis for the reexamination of current uses of interviews in a wide range of contexts - from social science research to job applications, welfare and health care delivery, criminal and legal investigations, journalism and broadcasting, and other areas of everyday life. His book will appeal to linguists, sociologists, anthropologists, historians, psychologists, as well as other readers whose research or professional activities depend on the use of interviews.

Essential Reading for Any Interviewer
By A Customer
Briggs provides an excellent approach for anyone who is interested in learning how to do interviews. In the first part of this book, he provides vivid and interesting examples that reveal ways in which tacit assumptions and implicit patterns of culture can influence interviewers to make mistakes in their research techniques. What is particularly inspiring about this book, is that Briggs refuses to throw up his hands in despair about the validity of field research. He shows how understanding cultural dynamics associated with interviewing can provide useful ways to develop stronger interviews. In sum, the cultural diversity that he documents provides a stepping stone for learning about others rather than an obstacle that prevents one from researching other individuals, groups, and communities. This book is a good antidote to the practice of ethnographic navel gazing, and it should be useful to folklorists, anthropologists, sociologists, reporters, and anyone else who learns and practices interview techniques.

A Must-Have for Fieldworkers!
By Sar C
I got this book for a graduate-level Fieldwork in Folklore class. There are a few parts that are dated because of technological references, but Briggs provides an excellent way of reconsidering how one asks questions in interviews during fieldwork. A great guide for any person interested in fieldwork in the social sciences and humanities.

Excellent Book
By Fanya Becks
Briggs is a very thoughtful Folklorist/Anthropologist who brings a lot of important questions to bear on how people interview for social research. Briggs always manages to be readable while also asking theoretical questions, I am a fan.

For Latin Americanists, this is a bible, pure and simple.
By Movie Man
One of my prized possessions. Reading these essays, I get a sense of exhileration about the field of Latin American literature and a concomitant sense of devasataion that I will never achieve the mastery evidenced by the contributing scholars. There is great information in this work, and--if you truly love the field--exciting overviews as well. The three volumes are truly the springboard for additional study that they were intended to be, and they really replace Enrique Anderson Imbert, Bellini, and others as the first "go to" handbook. For Latin Americanists, this collection is a bible, pure and simple.

be aware of the 3 volume set
By C. Barr
Overall, I love the Cambridge histories of literature. Unfortunately, this one, on Amazon, was a little misleading. Be aware that there is a 3 volume set for Latin American Literature! When I ordered this, they sent me Volume 3, which only covers Brazil. I sent it back and ordered from the publisher. Apparently the 3 volume set is difficult to find!

The Great Merger Movement in American Business, 1895-1904, by Naomi R. Lamoreaux

Between 1895 and 1904 a great wave of mergers swept through the manufacturing sector of the United States' economy. This book explores the causes of the mergers, arguing that there was nothing natural or inevitable about turn-of-the-century combinations. Despite this conclusion, the author does not accept the view that they were necessarily a threat to competition. She shows that most of these consolidations were less efficient that the new rivals that appeared almost immediately, and they quickly lost their positions of market dominance. More over, in most of those few cases where consolidations proved to be more efficient, the nation was better off for their formation. Some exceptions occurred, however, and in these instances anti-trust policy should have had a significant role to play. Unfortunately, the peculiar division of power and authority that characterizes the Federal system of government prevented an effective policy from emerging. Ironically, anti-trust policy proved much more effective against small firms in relatively competitive industries than large firms in oligopolistic ones.

Review
Review of the paperback: 'During the decade from 1895 to 1904, more than 1800 manufacturing firms merged into 157 consolidated corporations, many of which in turn dominated their industries and became some of the best-known companies in the United States. In the three generations since, capable scholars in many disciplines have offered a variety of explanations. Now, in a clearly written, sophisticated, and remarkably concise book, Naomi R. Lamoreaux presents a synthesis and bold critique of that scholarship, together with strikingly original insights of her own.' Journal of American History

Review of the paperback: 'Professor Lamoreaux has explored the great merger wave of turn-of-the-century America as an event produced by special circumstances that had serious implications for the health of the American business system nearly a century later. We can hope that she will continue to apply her enormous talent to a further explication of these implications.' Reviews in American History

Review of the paperback: 'In this book Naomi Lamoreaux directs our focus from the role of vertical integration and the managerial 'resolution' in the emergence of the large, modern corporation emphasized by Alfred Chandler back to where it had been initially, on the never-equalled wave of horizontal consolidations in manufacturing between 1895 and 1904. The causes and effects of this merger wave, which permanently altered the structure of the American economy, are important and difficult questions, usually sidestepped by new economic historians. Lamoreaux skillfully analyzes them with an imaginative blend of business history and cliometrics ... I found the book extremely interesting and suggestive and profited greatly from it. It is well written, clearly argued, and accessible to general historians as well as economists. It should have great impact in focusing attention on this important period of consolidating.' Journal of Economic History

Review of the paperback: 'This book is a model of good economic history and of good scholarship. Professor Lamoreaux has beautifully balanced a thorough reading of the history of the period with a plausible economic theory of the events and presented them in a readable and persuasive manner. I am certain that this will become the standard work on the great merger wave of the late nineteenth century.' Journal of Economic Literature

The Rise of Big Business in America
By not me
"The Great Merger Movement in American Business" is a fabulous monograph. It combines business history, legal history and oligopoly models to explain the sudden rise of industrial concentration in the 1890s. The basic idea is that firms with high fixed costs responded to the depression of 1893 by plunging into ruinous price wars, as they fought for market share in order to operate at full capacity. Seeing the suicidal implications of this strategy, the firms changed course and bought up or merged with their rivals, leading to industries dominated by one or two huge companies.

The book is short, clearly written, and uses simple models to great effect. Dispensing with neo-classical claptrap, the author doesn't assume that the merger movement of the 1890s was inevitable or dictated by considerations of efficiency. On the contrary, she finds that older industries with stable producer/seller relationships avoided merger mania, having already worked out arrangements to minimize price competition. She also recognizes that big firms can sometimes erect barriers to entry.

I highly recommend this book. Anyone interested in American economic history will like it a lot.

The Mediterranean City in Transition: Social Change and Urban Development (Cambridge Human Geography), by Lila Leontidou

The transition from feudalism to capitalism has occurred in many different ways and the variety of forms and methods of this transition is particularly evident in Southern Europe. Focusing on Greater Athens between 1948 and 1981--the crucial period of transition--the author explores the role of social classes in urban development in the cities of Mediterranean Europe. Based on extensive research, the book presents for the first time a history of the Greek urban popular classes during the twentieth century. The author challenges urban growth models based on the Anglo-American experience and convincingly presents her own theoretical framework combining economic and ecological considerations with Gramsci's theories of culture, spontaneity, and informality.

Review
"Using secondary sources for comparisons with other Mediterranean cities and archival studies for Athens, Leontidou has amassed considerable evidence--much of it presented in tables and maps--about how working-class migrants provided shelter for themselves in an unregulated building economy. Taken as an empirical account, Leontidou's book fills a gap in the literature." Josef W. Konvitz, Journal of Interdisciplinary History

Introduction to Higher-Order Categorical Logic (Cambridge Studies in Advanced Mathematics), by J. Lambek, P. J. Scott

In this volume, Lambek and Scott reconcile two different viewpoints of the foundations of mathematics, namely mathematical logic and category theory. In Part I, they show that typed lambda-calculi, a formulation of higher-order logic, and cartesian closed categories, are essentially the same. Part II demonstrates that another formulation of higher-order logic, (intuitionistic) type theories, is closely related to topos theory. Part III is devoted to recursive functions. Numerous applications of the close relationship between traditional logic and the algebraic language of category theory are given. The authors have included an introduction to category theory and develop the necessary logic as required, making the book essentially self-contained. Detailed historical references are provided throughout, and each section concludeds with a set of exercises.

"[The authors] present their material as persuasively and as lucidly as possible. In addition, they have included many useful exercises and illuminating historical and philosophical remarks, which should make the book attractive to an audience not confined to the already expert. This is an excellent and timely work on a subject that is assuming an increasingly important role in the foundations of mathematics." J.L. Bell, Journal of Symbolic Logic

This is definitely Higher!
By A Customer
I was looking for a book for my girlfriend this Christmas and stumbled upon this one. At first I thought it would be too light but was I ever mistaken!! This book is so high that it would make Jack Kerouac dizzy. It begins with a treatment of basic category theory and ccc's and then goes on to present toposes and intuitionistic type theory. The authors take care to annotate their turnstile with the set of free variables (Hah! I bet you thought I had no idea what this book was about!) so that they can deal with empty types in a reasonable way. The treatment of presheaf models is very lucid and the discussion of internal languages and lambda-calculi is excellent. In fact many papers of Koymans are just exercises from this book worked out. The book is slightly out of date, no treatment of linear logic or symmetric monoidal-closed categories. Overall this book is highly recommended for the beginner and expert alike.

Not useful for a philosopher
By N. Coppedge
This text offers valuable insights for many a logician, from the standpoint of computing and mathematics.

It is less useful from a philosophical viewpoint, as many of the contents relate directly to mathematics and not philosophy.

It's an interesting case: I don't exactly recommend this book, even though the writing is of very high quality.

The Refiner's Fire: The Making of Mormon Cosmology, 1644-1844, by John L. Brooke

Mormon religious belief has long been a mystery to outsiders, either dismissed as anomalous to the American religious tradition or extolled as the most genuine creation of the American imagination. The Refiner's Fire presents a new and comprehensive understanding of the roots of Mormon religion, whose theology promises the faithful that they will become "gods" through the restoration of ancient mysteries and regain the divine powers of Adam lost in the fall from Paradise. Professor Brooke contends that the origins of Mormonism lie in the fusion of radical religion with occult ideas, and organizes his book around the two problems of demonstrating the survival of these ideas into the nineteenth century and explaining how they were manifested in Mormon doctrine. In the concluding chapter, the author provides an outline of how Mormonism since the 1850s gradually moved toward traditional Protestant Christianity. As well as religion, the book explores magic, witchcraft, alchemy, Freemasonry, counterfeiting, and state-formation. John L. Brooke is professor of history at Tufts University and the acclaimed author of The Heart of the Commonwealth: Society and Political Culture in Worcester County, Massachusetts, 1713-1861 (CUP, 1989), which has won, among other prizes, the Organization of American Historians' Merle Curti Award for Intellectual History and the National Historical Society Book Prize for American History.

Review
"John Brooke takes a controversial romp over the field of previous Mormon scholarship. When he has done, he has managed to raise the intellectual pedigree of Joseph Smith by establishing his close kinship with European hermeticists and the subversive sectarians of the Radical Reformation. It is a fascinating argument that traces the influence of ideas through complicated social networks of neighbors and kin. The people 'prepared' for Mormonism are a surprising lot." R. Laurence Moore, Cornell University

"The Refiner's Fire explores the complex and always intriguing world of early Mormon theological and ritual evolution with remarkable learning, fairness, and daring--an exciting, sophisticated account sure to generate both controversy and a renewed appreciation of early Mormon spiritual creativity." John Butler, Yale University

"This is not just a revealing history of the backgrund of the first Mormons and early Mormonism but a larger history of early American culture that will do almost as much for readers who are interested in the cultural context in which this new American religion developed as it will do for those who simply want to learn more about Mormon beginnings." Jan Shipps, Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis

"His book is a model of the historian's enterprise....[Brooke] blends the passion of the detective and the dispassion of the good judge as he describes the background and context of Mormonism." Martin E. Marty, Commonwealth

"An insightful contribution to the controversy surrounding the origins of Mormonism." College & Research Libraries News

"Excellent....This study not only sets Mormon religious history into a frontier occult milieu but offers important understanding of the beliefs and practices of Americans outside the individual and institutional carriers commonly the focus of previous occult histories." The Reader's Review

"The Refiner's Fire is a wonderful book, thoroughly researched and rich in interpretive detail." Curtis Johnson, The Journal of American History

"The Refiner's Fire is an important and daring work for which Brooke has received the Bancroft Prize in American history....Combining intellectual and demographic history with rare skill, Brooke sheds great light on transatlantic subcultures that have not been labeled "occult" (read "hidden") for nothing." Religious Studies Review

From the Back Cover
Mormon religious belief has long been a mystery to outsiders, either dismissed as anomalous to the American religious tradition or extolled as the most genuine creation of the American religious imagination. This study presents the first extended analysis of Mormon theology to have been written against the backdrop of religion and popular culture in the early modern North Atlantic world, a context that permits the most coherent analysis of Mormon origins. John Brooke argues that Mormon doctrines of the mutuality of spirit and matter, of celestial marriage (in the nineteenth century, polygamous marriage), and of human deification can be understood only in light of the connections between the occult and the sectarian ideal of restoration forged among early modern religious radicals. Hermeticism, of which alchemy was the experimental practice, posited that humanity could regain the divine powers of Adam lost in the fall from Paradise; so too the prophet Joseph Smith promised the Mormon faithful that they would become "gods" through the restoration of ancient mysteries. Exploring the opposing forces of hermetic purity and danger - manifested in sectarian religion, magic, witchcraft beliefs, alchemy, Freemasonry, counterfeiting, and state formation - in the making of the Mormon church, the book closes with an overview of the transformation of Mormonism from the 1860s to the present.

Remarkable Book
By Peter G. Buckley
I have used The Refiner's Fire in my American Social History class to great effect. The students were fascinated not only by the subject matter (which was wonderful in the way it presented almost unimaginable links of popular thought)but also by Brooke's method.

Excellent; 4.5 Stars
By R. Albin
This well written and well documented book is a revealing look at the roots and genesis of the distinctive theology and cosmology of the LDS church. Brooke argues very well that LDS theology/cosmology has deep roots in the Western tradition, traceable back to the Hermetic tradition of the Classical world. Brooke shows an excellent correspondence between Mormon theology/cosmology and a combination of Hermetic ideas, alchemical ideas associated with the Hermetic tradition, milleniarianism derived from late Medieval mysticism, utopianism and perfectionism associated with radical sects of Reformation, and possibly aspects of folk magic traditions. This is more than a demonstration of correlations. Brooke does very well in showing the specific historical influences in colonial and early Republican America that contributed to the formation of Mormon theology/cosmology. These include the heritage of radical English sects, mystic traditions from German sects that were influential in the middle Atlantic colonies, and the 18th century revival of Freemasonry. Tracing some of these traditions through the families of early Mormon leaders, and in particular, the heritage and experiences of Joseph Smith, Brooke provides a concrete and persuasive reconstruction of how this set of idea came together to form the distinctive LDS theology/cosmology.

This book is valuable not only becuse of its insight into the history of the distinctively American phenomenon of Mormonism, but also because it shows the heterogenous nature of religious experience and ferment in colonial and early Republican America. The attractions of Mormonism, with its repudiation of original sin, its generous promise of eternal life to most, and the prospect of acquiring godly attributes in the afterlife, are depicted very well. Brooke also does very well in showing how Smith's ideas evolved from the time of his initial revelations to the time of his death. The concluding chapter is a nice history of how the LDS church had to modify some of the features of Smith's vision to survive in the more conventional Protestant dominated society of 19th and early 20th century America.

Hermeticism and Mormonism
By E M
This is the second time I've read his book. I am glad I read it again because the last time I read it was over a decade ago and I had not researched church history as thoroughly at that point as I have now. I've done a whole lot of reading and research since then. I have read through much apocalyptic, mystical and sectarian literature since originally reading this and I am in a much better position now to gauge the merits of this work; and I fully concur with the author as to his overall thesis; i.e. that Mormonism is largely dependent on Hermetic tradition for much of it's theology. I am also in the process of going through the Mormon "scriptures" as well, so that I can also be well grounded in LDS theology/cosmology straight from the sources themselves.
The author begins his investigation with early Protestant sectarianism in order to show the under currents of what would lay the groundwork for Mormon cosmology. I would say that having read much of the sectarian literature from the 16th to the 18th centuries, Mormonism is even more of a departure from Christianity than much of what made up those sects ideologically. None of those sects (i.e. Shakers, Ephrata community, Swedenborgians, Philadelphians, Muggletonians etc), as far as I am aware, made God only a human being, made matter eternal and made all people potential gods in the making. This aspect of Mormon thought is such a serious departure from Christianity that nothing that is essentially Christian is really to be found here. These kinds of ideas are present in different forms in polytheistic and pagan thought however. Hermeticism is more than a likely candidate for Joseph Smith's initial inspiration and later propagation of these notions. The most likely mediating source in my opinion is Swedenborg. Brooke does note Swedenborg's likely influence, but having read Swedenborg, I would give even more credit to Swedenborg than this author does. Protestant mystics like Boehme and Swedenborg were very much within the tradition of Hermeticism and Cabalism. Like Joseph Smith, Swedenborg also claimed that God was a man; albeit in Swedenborg this is a bit more ambiguous. Swedenborg apparently thought that God was a cosmic man in some more allegorical sense; Smith believed that God was a man literally. Almost certainly Smith got this notion from Swedenborg originally. Smith attests to having read Swedenborg and agreeing with much of his thought. I am not aware of Swedenborg ever positing that men would become gods in the sense Smith did. Swedenborg was even more monotheistic than many other sectarians were at the time (even going so far as to deny the Trinity). Mormonism is really not monotheistic at all; it is wholly polytheistic. There is no one God, only an eternal succession of actual and would-be gods. In this aspect of Mormon thought, no precedent in Christian sectarianism can be found. These kinds of notions are found only in pagan thought. Buddhism and Hinduism are similar, but Hinduism has a supreme God at least in theory. In Buddhism there are many gods, not just one and any enlightened Buddha is a god, for all intents and purposes. Mormonism is similar to Buddhism in it's belief in the eternal succession of gods and the eternity of matter. It is very similar to Hinduism in it's ideas regarding polygamy and the role it plays in godhood. Certainly, the sexual aspects of Hindu Kama Sutra does offer an interesting parallel; but in general, paganism always had a very particular reverence for the coital act and this played a huge role in the temple cult (another aspect of Mormonism). Undeniably, Smith's known polygamy and the importance he gave to copulation and reproduction finds no precedent in Judaism and Christianity. Despite what Mormons may claim, the patriarchal polygamy was not religious in any way. Christ condemned polygamy along with adultery, so by Christ's definition Smith was an adulterer. Of course, really by any definition Smith was an adulterer because he had married women who were already married. It's incredibly odd that the Book Of Mormon condemns polygamy as an abomination, yet Smith practiced it and sanctioned it. In short, Hermeticism seems to have been the initial inspiration given it's theurgic bent, but there are other aspects of Mormonism that are simply pagan modes of religion.
I have read Mormons criticize this book as being overly speculative. That is really a straw man argument. The author does engage in speculation, but the speculation is based on historical fact. Facts such as: 1) Joseph Smith was into divination; 2) Smith was a Freemason; 3) Smith had read much material that was of a Hermetic bent. All of the above are historically verifiable from Smith's own words and attested by those who knew him. All of the above more than substantiates Smith's involvement in Hermetic, occult and pagan tradition. Freemasonry has been propagating Egyptian Hermeticism since it's formation; that is easily substantiated. Swedenborg owed much to Hermetic thought; that is also easily substantiated. That Smith used seer stones and engaged in other forms of divination (things the Bible condemns btw) is also easily substantiated.
To sum up, I wholly agree with the author's thesis, although I might have explored further the role of Swedenborg and I might have explored contemporaneous channeled literature such as Jacob Lorber to give more context to overall religious trends of the time. There are odd parallels between Lorber's writings and the Pearl of Great Price.

Local Fields (London Mathematical Society Student Texts), by J. W. S. Cassels

The p-adic numbers, the earliest of local fields, were introduced by Hensel some 70 years ago as a natural tool in algebra number theory. Today the use of this and other local fields pervades much of mathematics, yet these simple and natural concepts, which often provide remarkably easy solutions to complex problems, are not as familiar as they should be. This book, based on postgraduate lectures at Cambridge, is meant to rectify this situation by providing a fairly elementary and self-contained introduction to local fields. After a general introduction, attention centres on the p-adic numbers and their use in number theory. There follow chapters on algebraic number theory, diophantine equations and on the analysis of a p-adic variable. This book will appeal to undergraduates, and even amateurs, interested in number theory, as well as to graduate students.

W. A. Mozart: Don Giovanni (Cambridge Opera Handbooks), by Julian Rushton

This book is a study of Mozart's Don Giovanni, his second opera to a libretto by da Ponte. Although it is one of the handful of best-known and most often performed operas of the last two hundred years, Don Giovanni is seldom given in an authentic form and arguments persist as to its nature. Julian Rushton takes the view that, notwithstanding the tragic nature of certain scenes, it must be regarded as an opera buffa. He gives a brief summary of its history and life in the theatre, but the chief historical essay (by Edward Forman) concerns the subject-matter before it reached da Ponte. The book includes a very detailed synopsis which forms the basis of an extended commentary on the librettist's handling of a plot constructed of both original and inherited ideas. Bernard Williams contributes an essay on Don Giovanni as an idea in literature and philosophy since Mozart. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography, and a discography of complete recordings compiled by Malcolm Walker.

The Interface between the Written and the Oral (Studies in Literacy, the Family, Culture and the State), by Jack Goody

Whilst the fundamental significance of the spoken language for human interaction is widely acknowledged, that of writing is less well known, and in this wide-ranging series of essays Jack Goody examines in depth the complex and often confused relationship between oral and literate modes of communication. He considers the interface between the written and the oral in three cultures or societies with and without writing, and that within the linguistic life of an individual. Specific analyses of the sequence of historical change within writing systems, the historic impact of writing upon Eurasian cultures, and the interaction between distinct oral and literate cultures in West Africa, precede an extensive concluding examination of contemporary issues in the investigation, whether sociological or psychological, of literacy. A substantial corpus of anthropological, historical and linguistic evidence is produced in support of Goody's findings, which form a natural complement to his own recently published study of The Logic of Writing and the Organization of Society.

From the Back Cover
Whilst the fundamental significance of the spoken language for human interaction is widely acknowledged, that of writing is less well known, and in this wide-ranging series of essays Jack Goody examines in depth the complex and often confused relationship between oral and literate modes of communication. He considers the interface between the written and the oral in three major contexts; that internal to given societies, that between cultures or societies with and without writing, and that within the linguistic life of an individual. Comprehensive And Readable
By Timothy Dougal
'The Interface Between the Written and the Oral' is a comprehensive look at the development of writing in general and alphabets in particular, oral poetry in ancient Greece and Modern Africa, oral transmission of (written) Vedas, the impact of writing on recently oral cultures in West Africa, and the impact of writing on our own abilities of thought and organization. Perhaps the most disheartening, but nonetheless informative section, deals with the counterintuitive measures that social scientists have come up with to measure the impact of literacy. They seem to be lacking in common sense. Goody, however, is full of common sense, and this book is excellent reading!

A Scholar that Sounds Like a Pastor
By Bill Confucius
The author is pretty sharp when he talks about how oral traditions helped develop some Indo-European languages. For example, discussions about Veda (the ancient holy scripture of India) is quite smart. But he was lost when he discusses oriental languages, especially Chinese.
In China, evidences of writing 4,000 years BCE (i.e., nearly 1,000 years earlier than any signs of writing appeared in Egypt or Mesopotamia.) have been found, while he claimed the earliest evidences dated around 1,500 BCE. And he almost made himself fantastic when he sympathetically cited a claim that the Indo-Europeans, in a twisted way, helped inspire China's writing system. Indeed, nobody is sure whether or not Indo-Europeans existed when writing first appeared in China, or even in Egypt or Mesopotamia.
One more thing that reveals the author's ignorance is the claim that Chinese (only) uses some 8,000 characters, and that somehow proves that Chinese is the most conservative language. Though what he meant is not entirely clear, there is an obvious misunderstanding here. He must have thought that those "characters" are equivalent with "words" in English. Isn't that true?
Well, while some of them are, they are much more than that. Those 8,000 charaters, when they come into use, form at least ... 40,000 words, sometimes in single characters, more often in pairs, and occsionally in triplets and quadruples. It is such words which are more "equivalent" to Indo-European words. For example, Fang, one character, is similar to House; Tian, to Heaven; Shi-jie, two charaters, to World; Qi-che, to Automobile; so on and so forth.
A modestly educated Chinese knows (either reads or writes) about 13,000 characters and thus 65,000 words, which, in terms vocabulary, makes him more than an equivalent of William Shakespere , who used a little more than 35,000 words, in all his plays and sonnets and other poems.
The author should know that he is not a pastor of any Indo-European gods. When a scholar addresses a broad audience, he should know that making insane claims doesn't help to advance his cause, because many in the audience might know something he doesn't.
An old Confucius saying might sober him up: One shouldn't brag about things he doesn't know well enough.

It is a MUST for everyone who is trying to understand how tools change our lives! The author discribes what writting is and how people can be rational without it. The fascinated world of a coexistance between ritual and literary knowledge stocking will be revealed. I'm sure you will reach for the author's previous work "Domestication of the Savage Mind" to know more.
