insight into family history

In researching my family genealogy, I learned that my earliest ancestor come to this country from England in 1639 as part of the "Great Migration". I wondered what would motivate a man who was a well established yeoman farmer to give up everything and take the risk to move his family to the wilderness of New England. This book shows why thousands of people made this journey, what the voyage over was like, and how they established themselves in a new society. What surprised me was how much communication there was with family and friends who remained in England. Anyone interested in the early colonial history of New England should read this book.

This series sets out to provide a programmatic survey of the individual writings of the New Testament. It aims to remedy the deficiency of available published material which concentrates on the New Testament writers' theological concerns. New Testament specialists here write at greater length than is usually possible in the introductions to commentaries or as part of other New Testament theologies, and explore the theological themes and issues of their chosen books without being tied to a commentary format, or to a thematic structure provided from elsewhere. When complete, the series will cover all the New Testament writings, and will thus provide an attractive, and timely, range of texts around which courses can be developed.

The letters of James, Peter, and Jude number among the most neglected parts of the New Testament. The authors of this study argue that the letters in question are more theologically significant than is often considered the case, and have a distinctive role to play in contemporary discussion of Christian faith. Andrew Chester sets James in context and discusses its main themes: eschatology, faith and works, ethical and social teaching; and (to a lesser extent) law, wisdom, human nature, ministry, God, and Christ. He addresses the problems that James has been seen to pose, in relation to Paul, for the canon and coherence of the New Testament, and points to the significance of James for the present day, especially in its attack on the rich and powerful and its demand for faith to be lived out in everyday life. Ralph P. Martin in turn shows how Jude and 1 and 2 Peter give insight into Jewish Christianity in its earliest development; how the Christian movement wasunderstood in an outlying region of the empire; and how the post-apocalyptic church utilized the memory of Peter for its practical needs. A Good look at the most ignored NT books

This book is difficult to review because it not only includes different authors and texts, but texts which seemingly bear little relationship to one another. James has little or nothing to do with 1 Peter which has little to do with Jude and 2 Peter. This collection is a hodgepodge and indeed represents the most neglected of the NT books (as though one just decided to lump them altogether since they are all outcasts together).
Chester's treatment of James is very thorough (more so than the other three). He does a good job addressing conventional issues like James' relationship to Paul but does not make that the essence of his discussion. Chester uncovers a surprising amount of "theology" in James and elucidates its usefulness quite nicely. Given his space and goal Chester does a great job but for a more in-depth treatment see R. Bauckham's "James: Wisdom of James, Disciple of Jesus the Sage."
Martin is forced to survey three very different books and he does so adequately. Jude gets a great treatment compared with the relative interest in it and one could not really ask anything more of such an introductory book.
1 Peter's coverage was fine but it was tantalizingly short for a book that has links to Pauline Christianity, 2 Peter, James (?), and the apostolic fathers. I found everything discussed insightful and worthwhile but desired more background, esp. since 1 Peter depends so much on its literary style as opposed to its historical setting or personality (like Paul's letters). The other disappointment, despitre my disdain for the cookie cutter set up of most of these books, is that there was little "1 Peter for today" discussion. So 1 Peter was a mixed affair.
2 Peter had better treatment considering how much it is ignored. Much time was discussed looking into its setting and placement in the development of Christianity while it still had some development of its theological themes. I guess with both it and 1 Peter a discussion on the nature of testamentary writings (as these both seem to be) and a contrast with Pauline letters would have helped the understanding of these books.
Overall, both authors did the best they could with such overlooked NT material and their contribution is both significant and meaningful.

Complex treatment of complex Judean history

The Jewish War (66-70 AD) is an underappreciated historical crisis. But the internecine battles between various Jewish sects, and collectively against Roman rule, was one of the bloodiest, most dramatic and fateul in history. The fact that future Caesers Vespasian and Titus personally led the battles against the Jews shows how important the war was in Roman eyes, and the famous or infamous diaspora (dispersion) of the Jews was sealed with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. The defeat of the Jews is so important that many professing Christians are at pains to believe at least some of the Gospels were written before 70 AD, for if they were written after 70 AD, the motive to spin history to favor of the Romans, or at least exonerate them in significant ways, in the trial and death of Jesus is clear - the Romans were the victors and the Jews were losers in any case. Goodman's treatment of the war is not the most accessible - it is very, very scholarly, and eclectic in some ways, as it is more concerned with the Jewish upper classes per se than other histories of this period(see anything Michael Grant has written for comparison). Still, the book is rich in footnotes and annotations and the serious student of this period will benefit from the book, though this probably should not be the first book about the Jewish War a beginner might read. Modern political scientists will see more - much more - than slight anticipation of the Muslim fundamentalist wars of today in the Jewish War, too. The different Jewish factions, and their devotion to strict interpretations of Jewish laws and symbols, as well as their anti-imperial sentiments and propensity for violence will make you wonder if you're really reading about antiquity, or are reading this morning's newspaper.

Magnificent history book

The Jewish war with Rome, which lasted from 66-70 AD, was a pivotal moment in history. Goodman asks how the war came about and he finds some surprising answers.

The Romans had a brilliant technique for dealing with their conquered territories. They would "build upon existing institutions, and depose the existing local leaders from power only when it seemed absolutely necessary" (p 29).

But there was a problem when it came to the Jews. Throughout most of the Roman world, rich landowners drew much of their prestige from patronage. Among the Jews, status was more likely to be tied to priestly function, and even a very poor man could be highly respected if he knew the scriptures well. On the other hand, the vast wealth of a tax collector or the power of a Herod drew no respect from the populace.

Religion and ideas--that was what counted in Jewish society. Many believed God would intervene and bring about a ruler from David's line. Josephus blames Judas of Galilee for the argument that "Jews should prefer death to submission to any mortal master instead of God" (p 93).

Goodman argues that the ruling class, for the most part, supported the war, and he gathers an impressive set of facts to prove it. Josephus suggested that the rulers stayed in Jerusalem only due to a pious wish to save the temple from destruction. Yet not only is this not true, as Goodman shows, the rulers, were, in fact, in charge throughout most of the war.

Over a million Jews died in the war. The few survivors were either crucified or shipped to Rome as slaves.

And afterwards, so much was changed. The temple was gone, and with it, all sacrifice and the entire priestly structure. To be a priest you had to prove your lineage, and all these papers were burned with the fire that destroyed the temple.

This book gives a new interpretation of the reception of the new world by the old. It is the first in-depth study of the pre-Enlightenment methods by which Europeans attempted to describe and classify the American Indian and his society. Between 1512 and 1724 a simple determinist view of human society was replaced by a more sophisticated relativist approach. Anthony Pagden uses new methods of technical analysis, already developed in philosophy and anthropology, to examine four groups of writers who analysed Indian culture: the sixteenth-century theologian, Francisco de Vitoria, and his followers; the 'champion of the Indians' Bartolomé de Las Casas; and the Jesuit historians José de Acosta and Joseph François Lafitau. Dr Pagden explains the sources for their theories and how these conditioned their observations. He also examines for the first time the key terms in each writer's vocabulary - words such as 'barbarian' and 'civil' - and the assumptions that lay beneath them.

Peter Duffett-Smith is a physicist by training, and a radio astronomer by trade. He is a Reader in Experimental Radio Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, and is a fellow of Downing College and the Royal Astronomical Society.

This book is as beautiful as an astrolabe

For all stargazers who have university level math, and those equipped with lighter high school stuff, this book is a gem. In a few pages, and with nothing more than a pocket calculator, it allows you to explore the universe in a way which only a few hundred years ago was only possible with extensive state-support and massive buildings such as Stonehenge, state-sponsored observatories, and teams of pedantic astrologers and stargazers.

Starting from the simple building blocks (converting your local time to Universal time), it progresses to more and more complex calculations, until finally at the end, you can calculate eclipses and planetary orbits. All the formulas needed for doing this are given in the book, and explained in great detail with many diagrams. All relevant astronomical data is also given. And for every calculation, a sample example is carried out with real numbers, which you can trace along with, so by the end of it you understanding is complete, practically as well as theoretically.

A must read for any astronomy buff. I highly recommend it. It produces the information age equivalent of that feeling of satisfaction you get when you build a telescope and look out onto the heavens yourself--without any intermediaries. Astronomy and stargazing are the activities which were the genesis of the scientific revolution, more than 6000 years ago. This book shows you just how its done.

Excellent Value at $11.80

Amateur astronomers will be able to solve a multitude of practical problems with this book. If you are short on funds and have time to explore, this is the book for you. It is well organized and reasonably complete.

The extremely concise - bordering on laconic - style poses the danger that some readers may become discouraged and will give up. The low price makes it a tempting entry-level book, but the terse explanations means you'll have to do a lot of digging, which is a cookbook recipe to discourage newcomers to a field.

I have two critiques of this otherwise excellent work.

1.) The formulae presented in this book are a little too "cookbook" in for my tastes.

2.) Further they are only weakly validated, so it is difficult to know how accurate the results are.

The cookbook nature provides little insight into the physical problem being solved. It did motivate me to buy and study Smart's "Spherical Astronomy". If you want more than superficial answers, you'll need to dig deeper.

Validation is rarely a problem for amateurs. Most people who buy this book will program the recipes on their home computers. (Most are readily amenable to treatment in spreadsheets.) So far, no problem. But how do you know whether or not your calculation of the position of Mars 60,000 ago is any good?

I think that Meeus and Montenbruck largely avoid these problems, but at a much higher selling price.

UPDATE: They must have read my review! There is a new version of this book by Cambridge Press and a website from which you can download spreadsheets implementing at least some of the algorithms. You do not have to buy the book to download the spreadsheets, but if you can afford the book, you shouldn't be a free loader. I did download a couple of the spreadsheets to check them out. I had some stylistic issues initially, a kind of "that's not how I would have done it" reaction. On second thought, from a purely diadatic prespective, their approach is better. I tested the accuracy of solar ephemerides for the next 400 years, and they agree with JPL Horizons to within 0.0055 degrees RMS. If you need better than that, you shouldn't be using a spreadsheet. I found I could reduce the disagreement to less than 0.0014 degrees RMS by adding a term to account for the 18.60 year precession of the lunar nodes. I hardly recommend trying to improve it, it is more than adequate as is. I will review the new book once I've had more time to study it.

Since I broached the topic, I'll supply the formula for the correction to the spreadsheet SunPos:

e = Ao*sin( 6793/2/pi()*T + phi)

Ao = 0.004119054
T = days since Jan 1, 2000 00h UTC
phi = 3.593663052

It's not worth doing, but I did it anyway. I've only done a fit over the period 2000 AD to 2400 AD.

Nice at twice the price

Don't be misled by the title. The recipes supplied by Peter Duffett-Smith are aimed at making calculations easier with a hand held calculator. However they are easily adapted for creating utilities on personal computers. The material should be easily handled by anyone whose completed highschool algebra and some trigonometry.
The organization and format is well thought out. The earliest chapters deal with time and coordinates which are used in the more complex problems such as computing planet positions later in the book.
Each concept is explained in straight forward language and conventional algebraic formulas are supplied. I found this especially useful for programmers using higher languages such as C,Pascal or Java. Then a step by step practical example is provided that is suitable for a scientific hand calculator. Duffett-Smith is careful about displaying units; a mindfield for most scientific calculations.
My only minor criticism is that some of the typos errors could leave a user quite frustrated. On pp108 I found the value of Tp=0.240850 gave the correct answer while the tabulated value is 0.240852. Similarly, I on page 129, after repeated checks, I got a value of 7.08...AU for Rho compared with the value of 8.13AU in the book. The text cites a 7.2AU value from the Astronomical Almanac.
Otherwise this is one neat addition to the bookshelf of any amateur astronomer of individual interested in astromical calculations.
