an excellent companion

I've turned to this thin book far too many times to count. It was also a life-saver when I was learning General Relativity because of its clear and careful exposition. Schrodinger was doing this back when nobody was quite sure what the deal was with, e.g., index notation, and he took pains to lay out the benefits -- but also the limits -- of that system. See, for example, his discussion of the derivative operator, something that is almost always glossed over.
I'm in the middle of my dissertation now, and every now and then I hit on a subtlety in GR that my advisor has missed but I caught from reading this book.
Don't get thinking that this is Schrodinger's book on the unified field. It is more like the lecture notes of a very intelligent man figuring out what on Earth this truly new version of gravity is all about.
In the end of course this book is too slim to live on its own as a GR text. You will need to carry around a bigger, more comprehensive tome to get through your studies. As a handguide and emergency sense-maker, however, it has few equals.

A good text with unique information

I am an advanced undergraduate physics student who has started to go through Space-Time Structure. It seems to be a very good book, but the section introducing tensors was not as lucid as it could be. If you already know tensors or have a good book like Shaum's Outline of Tensor Calculus, then it can be a very useful introduction to the affine viewpoint of relativity that Schrodinger promotes. The discussion of nonsymmetric unified field theories is introductory and it would be necessary to look up the references it cites to get a more in depth understanding of them.

This book presents the results of Schroedinger's work in Ireland in which he explored the manifold of possibilities for unified field theories along the general lines pursued by Einstein. The main accomplishment was in constructing such a theory from just the connection, with metric derived as a consequence, using no ad hoc assumptions. I extended this work in my 1977 Master's thesis. While this kind of theory has gone out of style, it is still an exciting pursuit and Schroedinger's writing is clear and compelling.

Lots of exposition in this book. The beginning 3 chapters are very nice and clearly written, although it seems like the techniques of chapters 2 and 3 are essentially nulled after the introduction to the Spectral Theorem. At that point, he goes on to derive the general solution of any self-adjoint kernel in about half a page and give a general form to the Fredholm alternative as well.

After that, the book applies the techniques of spectral analysis for a huge host of applications. Another thing I enjoyed was some of the bonus information contained in the exercises. Although it is cumbersome to do every possible exercise (and unrealistic) I still suggest reading through all of the exercises. A lot of them will bring up pretty interesting applications in areas such and fluid dynamics and elastic theory. Initially I was weary to buy this book because there were no reviews up at the time, but I am very happy I ended up buying this book.

One more thing I would add is that the book technically does not require too much functional analysis, but I imagine that it would be incredibly tiring and possibly overwhelming to read through the wall of definitions introduced to try to get as much Hilbert space theory out there as possible. Integral equations are difficult on their own, but having to wrap your head around the definitions and theorems of Hilbert spaces would be a distraction from the material the author really wants to get across.

Metaphors of Mind seeks to help readers understand human intelligence as viewed from a variety of standpoints, such as psychology, anthropology, computational science, sociology, and philosophy.

About the Author
Robert J. Sternberg is Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Psychology at Tufts University. Prior to being at Tufts, he was IBM Professor of Psychology and Education, Professor of Management in the School of Management, and Director of the Center for the Psychology of Abilities, Competencies, and Expertise at Yale University. This center, now relocated to Tufts, is dedicated to the advancement of theory, research, practice, and policy advancing the notion of intelligence as developing expertise, as a construct that is modifiable and capable, to some extent, of development throughout the lifespan. The Center seeks to have an impact on science, education, and society. Sternberg was the 2003 President of the American Psychological Association and is the 2006 2007 President of the Eastern Psychological Association. He was on the Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association and the Board of Trustees of the APA Insurance Trust. He is currently on the Board of Trustees of the American Psychological Foundation and on the Board of Directors of the Eastern Psychological Association as well as of the American Association of Colleges and Universities. Sternberg received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1975 and his B.A. from Yale University. He holds honorary doctorates from eight universities. He is the author of over 1,100 journal articles, chapters, and books. He focuses his research on intelligence, creativity, and wisdom and has studied love and close relationships as well as hate. This research has been conducted on five different continents.

The absolute BEST Latin text series ever!

I have been a Latin teacher for 18 years, and I have used the Cambridge Latin Course for ten of those years. If you want your students to learn to read Latin, this is the book for you. If you are teaching Latin in the IB (International Baccalaureate) Program, don't even consider using another text.
CLC features a continuing story line with the wine-drinking, dining-room- inhabiting "hero" Quintus Caecilius Iucundus surviving the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and traveling to Greece, Alexandria, and far-off Britannia, then to Rome where he assists in the prosecution of the evil-doer Salvius for forgery. Students like the stories so much that they read ahead to see what is going to happen next.

While rote-memorization of forms is not emphasized, grammar is still taught both directly and intuitively in this series. Sadly, the workbook for Unit 3 is not as good as the textbook.

Not The Best Text

This is definitely not the best text for intermeditate Latin on the market. The first two books were very easy in comparison, but here is where you start getting to the gist of the language. The first two books in this series leave on ill-prepared for dealing with the level of difficulty presented in this book. The approach may be good to get someone interested in Latin, but utlimately, it will leave you with only a very incomplete grasp of the language. While rote memorisation is not much fun, one needs to know a certain amount of detail about the language and one needs to memorise lots and lots of stuff. The approach in the Cambridge series is to sort of 'absorb" the material as you go along. But it really doesn't work that way. After you finish this book, you may well not know much more than when you started. It may be okay for a pupil who needs credit for a foreign language course, but is not really for the serious student.

About the Author
Thucydides (c. 460 BC400 BC) was a general who was exiled for his failure to defend the Greek city of Amphipolis in Thrace. During his exile, he began compiling histories and accounts of the war from various participants.Rex Warner was a Professor of the University of Connecticut from 1964 until his retirement in He was born in 1905 and went to Wadham College, Oxford, where he gained a first in Classical Moderations, and took a degree in English Literature. He taught in Egypt and England, and was Director of the British Institute, Athens, from 1945 to 1947. He has written poems, novels and critical essays, has worked on films and broadcasting, and has translated many works, of which Xenophon s History of My Time and The Persian Expedition, Thucydides The Peloponnesian War, and Plutarch s Lives (under the title Fall of the Roman Republic) and Moral Essays have been published in Penguin Classics.M. Enjoyable foray into Thucydides

For an author with as small a core vocabulary as Thucydides, chewing this Greek can feel pretty tough. Sentences pile on to a dizzying length, many words come heavily loaded, and he can be awfully terse in stringing together several individual and important ideas in otherwise simple narrative. Thankfully, Rusten has done a very good job with the notes. At points I was hoping for more insight, and there are numerous references to Gomme's much fuller commentary where Rusten did not deem it worthwhile to spend anymore time. But his unique treatment of the funeral oration was superb and even if one were to discount everything else in the book it would be valuable to have for this alone.

Nice way to learn difficult Greek

Thuc is generally acknowledged as being a difficult writer to read, especially for students only a few years into their studies, but this edition eases the reader into his style. Copious notes aid the reader with the more trying sentences and helpful "summaries" give an overview of important sections. I think I've read someone describing the treatment here of Perikles' Funeral Oration as a "tour de force" - and, considering Perikles' (or Thuc's?) at times bafflingly scattered sentence structure, it is certainly helpful to have someone such as this author to guide you along. I did come out of this experience with a bittersweet affection for Thuc, and it was partly due to this edition of the Greek text. J F Rusten knows his stuff and it's wonderful he's chosen to share that knowledge.

Professor Rusten nearly equals Clyde Pharr in his presentation of Book II. The only advantage which Rusten does not provide is a vocabulary list. Commentary is helpful, if in the form of end notes, and fairly thorough. He presents a useful text for students of Attic Greek and to instructors of Thucydides. Either as an advanced [very] undergraduate Greek course or as part of an introductory graduate one, Rusten's edition is a valuable adjunct to the Loeb or the OCT in conjunction with the Crawley translation or the Landmark volume.

The best critical edition of Antigone

This is the standard and also the best critical edition of Sophocles' tragedy ANTIGONE, written and performed in Athens in 441BC. It includes the full text, philological explanation and commentary, as well as essays by leading scholars of classical literature.For my new translation (into Finnish) of the play, this edition is the best and the most reliable. ANTIGONE is the story of various conflicts between state and individual, between gods and men, between men and women, and it has spoken its clear message to audiences through generations.

About the Author
Steven C. Frautschi joined the California Institute of Technology faculty in 1962 and became professor emeritus in 2006. His publication list includes 80 research papers on the theory of high energy physics, and the book 'Regge Poles and S- Matrix Theory'. He has served as Master of Student Houses and has won three student teaching awards.

Richard P. Olenick is currently the chair of Department of Physics at University of Dallas. He was Associate Project Director of the PBS Series The Mechanical Universe and Beyond the Mechanical Universe, which accompanied this textbook and its successors. He has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education for his work in physics education. His current project is C3P, which developed an inquiry-based curriculum for high school physics. In 1995, Dr Olenick was named Texas Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation and in 1997, he was named a Minnie Piper Steven Professor. In 2003, he became the Nancy Cain Marcus and Jeffrey A. Marcus Chair in Science and in 2005 he received the King Award from the University of Dallas, which is the highest honor the University can bestow on a faculty member.

Tom M. Apostol joined the California Institute of Technology faculty in 1950 and is now Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus. He is internationally known for his textbooks on Calculus, Analysis, and Analytic Number Theory, which have been translated into 5 languages, and for creating Project MATHEMATICS!, a series of video programs that bring mathematics to life with computer animation, live action, music, and special effects. The videos have won first-place honors at a dozen international video festivals, and have been translated into Hebrew, Portuguese, French, and Spanish. His list of publications includes 98 research papers, 46 of them published since he retired in 1992. He has received several awards for his research and teaching. In 1978 he was a visiting professor at the University of Patras in Greece, and in 2000 was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens, where he delivered his inaugural lecture in Greek.

Dr. David L. Goodstein is Vice Provost and Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology, where he has been on the faculty for over 35 years. In 1995, he was named the Frank J. Gilloon Distinguished Teaching and Service Professor. In 1999, Dr Goodstein was awarded the Oersted Medal of the American Association of Physics Teachers, and in 2000, the John P. McGovern Medal of the Sigma Xi Society. He has served on and chaired numerous scientific and academic panels, including the National Advisory Committee to the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate of the National Science Foundation. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the California Council on Science and Technology. His books include States of Matter and Feynman's Lost Lecture, written with his wife, Dr. Judith Goodstein. In the 1980s, he was Director and host of The Mechanical Universe television program.

An clear presentation of mechanics

I saw the excellent Mechanical Universe Television series while I was in high school and I recently purchased this book. I've just finished reading this book and am simultaneously doing problems in Schaum 3000 Physics problems. This is a great reader to use as it puts the physics in the historical context and traces the reasoning these great scientists used in inducing their conclusions in the first place. The explanations are mostly very clear. Some of the historical interpretations are questionable but they do not detract from the overall value of the historical approach. This is how all physics should be taught.

A Marvelous and Timeless Intro to Physics (and Calculus)

This book may be older than my college-age daughter, but it's still one of the best introductions to elementary physics that you'll find anywhere. Marvelously readable, the authors do a wonderful job of interweaving historical context for the development of the ideas with lucid explanations of the modern understanding.

Be aware that calculus is sprinkled liberally throughout. Fortunately, the authors introduce and explain the calculus they use, and they do it in a way that is not only easy and painless; you actually begin to see why modern physics would not be possible without calculus.

With its highly readable explanations and historical perpective, this book might make a good back-up text for a college student taking Intro Physics. It's also suitable as the backbone of an advanced high school course where the instructor desires to incorporate calculus. In fact, there was a TV series that closely follows the text, minus the calculus, and is targeted at high school students. You can still find it on DVD and VHS (although not from Amazon) but you'll pay $450 to $500 for all 26 (maybe 28?) hours.

Finally, it's perfect if you (like me) went to school too many years ago and would just like to refresh your knowledge of the subject. I know a lot of amateur astronomers who fit in that category! As a bonus, you get a refresher course in calculus along the way.

Note that there is a second volume that dives into electromagnetism as well as quantum mechanics at the same introductory level. There is also an "advanced" version of this book that I have not looked at. Judging from the table of contents, however, it appears to be the same basic material slightly re-organized.

Highly recommended.

invitation to elliptic functions and Riemann surfaces

this book goes from the Riemann sphere up to the modular function and the great Picard Theorem via geometry and group theory; it is an excellent book to begin with from an elementary knowledge of complex functions since it is rather self-contained; I see it as a fine blending of different area of mathematics and as such it should help its reader towards more understanding (through serious work...) of those. As an example, I opened the book at random an found the rule for adding points of a cubic (page 119). As a matter of facts, when I first met hyperbolas as groups via geometric addition of their points, I was rather dumbfounded. It's a pity that the hardback edition cannot be found anymore...

This book was very useful to me during an undergrad course on modular functions. A good blend of number theory, algebraic geometry, and complex analysis at an approachable level. Lots of interesting results presented very clearly.

A postmodern second course in complex analysis

First there are two short chapters on the Riemann sphere and Möbius transformations, probably partly familiar to many readers. Chapter 3 on elliptic functions opens with the following sentence, which illustrates the type of unconvincing pseudo-motivation that occur throughout the book: "Having considered the sphere and its meromorphic functions in the first part of this book, we now turn our attention to another compact surface, the torus, and its meromorphic functions." From here the theory of elliptic functions unwinds along a path that is largely hidden from us, although towards the end of the chapter we are rewarded for fumbling ahead with a discussion of elliptic curves and even a vague allusion to number theory. Now we are warmed up for a general treatment of Riemann surfaces (chapter 4). People often lament that such a simple and beautiful idea requires so much technical machinery to be treated rigourously. Jones & Singerman certainly don't prove them wrong. Chapter 5 is called "PSL(2,R) and its discrete subgroups". This is a heavily geometrical topic, especially since PSL(2,R) is half the isometry group of the half plane model of hyperbolic geometry. Indeed, instead of praising this as a pleasantly geometrical part of function theory, it is perhaps even more satisfying to treat it geometrically altogether (cf. Stillwell). Anyway, the prime example of those "discrete subgroups" of chapter 5 is the modular group, which gets the final chapter 6 all to itself. The whole book has a thoroughly modern feel to it. Admittedly, there is an impressive amount of mathematics for such a modestly sized book, but personally I think there are still many virtues of a more classical and less mysterious approach as well, such as Hurwitz & Courant or Siegel (neither of which is in the bibliography).

This 1987 book is a self-contained text on the probabilistic modelling method. It provides the reader with an understanding of the available results as well as with examples of their application. The only background assumed is a knowledge of basic calculus. The necessary fundamentals of probability are presented followed by an introduction to stochastic processes. The remainder of the book is devoted to the treatment of various single-station and their application to uni-programmed and multi-programmed systems and local and wide-area networks. Both exact and approximate solution methods are discussed, with as much emphasis on explaining the ideas and providing information, as on derivations and proofs. This book will still be of use for anyone with an interest in the history of computer science.
