The view of language use proposed here derives from the authors' extensive fieldwork in the Creole-speaking Caribbean and among West Indian communities in London, and is forcefully illustrated by the data they present, which include recorded conversations and stories. The authors re-examine such concepts as 'a language', 'correct usage', 'race' and 'ethnic groups' and clearly reveal the complex role of language in establishing relationships within regional and social communities and at the state or national level.

A well written, classic text written by three larger than life math legends (Hardy, Littlewood, Polya). This is the definitive and monumental text on inequality -- the little angular symbols you see in all fields of mathematics -- from analysis to number theory to topology to combinatorics (i would say all fields of science but I am not a math apologist, mind you, so I would stay with those things I know something about).

In The Relevance of the Beautiful, Gadamer hopes to justify the ways of art to modern man. He's answering Plato's banishment of the poets in The Republic, and every other such banishment, including Hegel's, who claimed that "art is a thing of the past" on the grounds that art re-establishes our sense of transcendence and order, that it "bridges the chasm between the ideal and the real," establishes our sense of "play," and otherwise enlarges our experience of life, communally, spiritually, culturally, and individually. It teaches us to go beyond ourselves. German philosopher, Hans-Georg Gadamer, famed student of Heidegger and author of the seminal Truth and Method, offers this phenomenological defense. As translated by Robert Bernasconi, Gadamer writes such a poetic and aphoristic prose that anyone with a moderate background in the arts can read it, as well as philosophers, artists, and critics. This essay is useful for a number of reasons: it gives articulate defenses-or condemnations-of translation, modern music (both pop and experimental), kitch, religious art, and historical painting. It is further particularly useful to me in that the grounds on which he makes many of his defenses mirror those of P.B. Shelley in "A Defense of Poetry."

They held loyalties not only to their own houses or monastic leaders, but also formed part of a nexus of social, economic and spiritual relationships which bound together the 'powerful' in the middle Byzantine state. Monasticism displayed a highly individualistic streak, unlike the Western religious 'orders'. Using hagiography, chronicles and, in particular, the newly available archives of the Athonite monasteries, this book reassesses the role of monks in Byzantine society and examines the reasons for the flowering of the monastic life in the period from the end of iconoclasm to the beginning of the twelfth century. It is the first study of its kind in English, and is aimed at anyone interested in either the Western or the Byzantine early medieval religious life.

Part II examines the potential of Ricoeur's narrative theory for resolving certain theological problems, such as the dichotomy betweens the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith.

The Byzantine empire began with the transformation of the Roman empire initiated by the official acceptance of Christianity and the establishment of Constantinople as the capital city. It ended with the fall of that city to the Ottoman Turks in 453. The art and architecture of the empire reflects its changing fortunes, the development of Christianity, and the cultural influences that affected it. This book offers a systematic introduction to the material culture of the Byzantine empire, from the fourth to the fourteenth centuries. It provides for the student or any other interested reader a compendium of material which is generally difficult of access: much of the writing on Byzantine art and architecture is not in English, and is published as articles in scholarly journals. The book sets out the subject in an accessible manner, describing and discussing by period the surviving material - and that which can be reconstructed from documentary sources - and exploring its social/historical context. The text is copiously illustrated by well over 300 halftones, plans and maps.

Finally ! An high caliber, sensible introduction

Honestly, the first of its kind. A rich and truly significant era of art history meticulously researched has produced a truly wonderful volume aimed at university-level students, with thorough additional sources thoughtfully appended. Rodley is a leading British scholar of this period, with outstanding field experience. Majority of pictures are her own, and beautifully rendered. Absolutely should be a required text all art/art history libraries. A significant contribution to the canon. Future textbooks would do well to follow Rodley's lead in style and presentation.

Great Information,yet black and white pictures.

Great information, but unfortunately to completely enjoy and this text a supplement of another type with pictures conveying byzantine art would be necessary. IF you are easily bored this book will not sustain you. Most people need color pictures and thus you will be disappointed. However if you are looking for an overall historical representation of Byzantine art History this is a decent book.

Five satires by Juvenal

Reading satire in the original Latin can be problematic, since Roman authors usually assume a certain amount of cultural understanding from his coeval audience. Juvenal is no exception. I found Braund's commentary on Juvenal's Latin to be very helpful at explicating the author's syntax and organization, as well as providing a context for the larger unity of these five satirical poems. In addition to a thorough introduction, her commentary includes short essays after each individual satire. This book makes Juvenal's acerbic wit much more approachable to the student of Latin.

the commentary is not particularly useful because it goes for the "just translate this line" ...

The text is well laid out and each satire is followed by an in-depth essay. However, the commentary is not particularly useful because it goes for the "just translate this line" method. Worth the purchase if you are serious about reading Juvenal, however. The contextual notes (history, culture, etc.), opposed to the grammatical ones, are quite useful for understanding what Juvenal actually means.
