Professor Roemer's goal in this book is to give a rigorous view of classical Marxian economic theory by presenting specific analytic models. The theory is not extended to deal with new problems, but it is deepened: Marxian theory is given micro-foundations and upon those foundations the author begins to rebuild a tightly constructed Marxian economics. The book begins, after a methodological introduction, with an examination of the Marxian notion of equilibrium and the theory of exploitation, and goes on to deal with the theory of the falling rate of profit. The next section explores one of the points made in the first section of the book, that the Marxian theory of exploitation can be constructed completely independently of the labor theory of value as a theory of exchange. Technical study of this problem allows comment on various issues, such as the relative importance of "marginal utilities" and "class struggle" in determining relative prices. The final part examines models of various Marxian concepts.

A must-have, best with books taking different positions

The book collects Roemer's early papers about Marxian Economic Theory. Roemer presents and extends the famous results by Morishima and Okishio, and adds his own insights on the theory of class and exploitation. Following Steedman, Roemer discredits the labor theory of value as unnecessary to account for exploitation.
The analytical rigor in treating the subject is among the things that make the book worth buying for anyone interested in mathematical economics: sitting down with paper and pencil for a couple of months in reading the book will be a beautiful intellectual experience, and it will add a whole set of "weapons" to the neoclassically trained economist.
There is maybe too much emphasis on the equilibrium method. One might also want to know that there are several solutions to the transformation problem, not all reaching such destructive conclusions. To have a full analytical preparation on Marx, Roemer's book is best bought together with the books by Foley Understanding Capital: Marx's Economic Theory (much less challenging mathematically)

Douglas Fettes is an Honorary Research Associate at the British Geological Survey, and Chairman of the SCMR. He compiled the UK section of the Metamorphic Map of Europe and has over forty years' involvement with structural and metamorphic studies. Jacqueline Desmons, a researcher at the French 'Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique', has dedicated most of her career to the Alps and their metamorphism, including the high P/T events, metamorphic maps and reviews.

Ordered to Care: The dilemma of American nursing, 1850-1945

I enjoyed this book immensely. The author chronicles the history of nursing from pre-training schools to post-WW11. The author is not a nurse and her focus is on the history of women in society. The book is broken down into three parts - the nurse and the hospital before training (two chapters), the trained nurse: an apprentice to duty (four chapters), and the "re-forming" of nursing (four chapters). The style is easy to read and very detailed with narratives, biographies, and statistics. Anyone who is interested in the history of nursing should read this book.

This text is the foremost in documented nursing history. The references and citations are well researched and edited. There are few books about nursing's beginning to the mid-20th century -this one is the best!

Introduction to Stellar Astrophysics Vol 2

This is an excellent series Vol 1 thur 3 for the person wishing to review the basics of stellar astrophysics. I stress the words review for the author assumes at least a basic level of knowledge on how astronomical data is measured. The reader is cautioned to be versed in basic mathematical skills up through the beginning calculus level as detailed worked out examples are not provided in the text. At the conclusion of this and Volumes 1 and 3 are a series of chapter review problems for which there are no answers provided. Volume 1 and 3 deal with stellar data and interiors.

This is a good set of volumes and worth having if you are knowledgeable in the subject. It is not a self teaching set but a sound set to be used for classroom work at the intermediate level.

My only real complaint was that the author did not provide worked out answers to the problem sets at the end of each book.

A good introduction to the subject if you remenber basic physics.

I bought this years ago because I have always been interested in the subject. In retirement, I have had time to go back to it and find it very easy to follow if you took sophomore physics years ago and have used it enough to remember some. The math level required is algebra and beginning calculus. Again if you have done math at this level over the years it is not a math strain. Most of the arguments are easy to follow if you have a technical back ground,.

A Very Good History of the Irish Short Story

A History of the Irish Short Story by Heather Ingman is a very well done work of literary history with a lot to teach readers like me without academic training in the history of Irish literature or the short story.

Ingman did a very good job of explaining how the Irish short story became such a dominating literary form. She says, as does pretty much all who write on the short story, that Edgar Alan Poe was the first writer to produce self-consciously atristic short stories without a primary didactic purpose. The first Irish short story writers, people like William Carleton and Maria Edgeworth were caught in a cultural and economic dilemma. They were committed to the Irish but they were educated as if they were English and the audience for their stories was much greater in London than Dublin or Galway. She also talks about writers like Edith Sommerville and Violent Martin (AKA Ross Martin) who wrote stories which seem on first glance to be making fun of the Irish as buffoons who need an English magistrate to run their lives for them. Ingman does a good job, and for what it is worth, I think she is right, of explaining that there is a lot more depth in their stories than this. She talks about William Carleton as a transition figure from works in the tradition of the story teller with a primarily moral purpose to George Moore whose The Untilled Field she tells us marks the start of the modern Irish short story.

She talks about the role that magazines, which began in Ireland in the mid 1830s, had in the development of the Irish short story. This parallels exactly the development of the Australian short story sixty years later. William Trevor has said that the short story was a dominant literary form in Ireland because the Irish did not have a large enough body of people with the leisure time and the education to read long novels whereas the English did have these conditions which explains why the novel dominates in England and the short story in Ireland. The exact same conditions prevailed in Australia up until after WWI and you see a similar domination of the literary world there by short stories published in two magazines.

Ingman goes on to explain how The New Yorker's willingness to publish and pay top money for short stories came to shape the Irish short story in that writers wrote stories they thought the editors of the magazine would like. It also imposed length requirements. This same need to satisfy the requirements of magazine editors, especially those of The Hindu Times, shaped the modern Indian short story.

Ingman covers all of the big name writers. I think what I most found edifying in the book was the account of the transition from the 19th century short story to the modern era story. What I liked best about the book was the many reading ideas I got from it. I already have in mind an idea for a project for Irish Short Story Week Year 3 set to start March 1, 2013. Elizabeth Bowen wrote seven stories set in Ireland and I think I will do a series of posts on them. Ireland was neutral during WWII while Bowen was deeply committed to the English side and spent the war years in London. Ingman spends a lot of time in the book dealing with the question of the Irish identity of Irish short story writers.

I think anyone with an interest and at least a starting level of erudition in the Irish short story will enjoy and profit from this collection. I would classify it as sort of half way between a pure academic book and popular history. If I lived in Dublin I would love to take a class or two from Professor Ingman.

The history of south east Asia up to 1990-1 is given by Dixon. Much of the text looks at the events under European colonialism, where only Thailand was able to stay independent.

Throughout most of the recent history, the economic development was largely agricultural and mining. What is distinctive are the events of the post war period, when Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand were able to industrialise successfully. Indeed, the book show that Singapore was by 1990 a fully developed country, while Malaysia and Thailand achieved high literacies and eliminated much poverty.

The book also shows that Indonesia and Philippines were much less successful, and were burdened by massive corruption and remained still largely rural, quasi-feudal societies.
