Essential History of a Millenium of Changing Roman Religion.

"Religions of Rome, Volume 1: A History" presents a millennium of Roman religion, following the place and practice of religion in Roman society from the primitive village to the Christian capitol, the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD. This is an impressive collaborative effort by Mary Beard, John North, and Simon Pierce. The prose is dense with information but always interesting and articulate. The authors provide a fascinating window on how religion and its place in society adapted over many centuries and, therefore, valuable insight on how religion functions in human societies, not just ancient Rome. They only occasionally quote a primary source, as primary sources are found in "Religions of Rome, Volume 2: A Sourcebook" and are referenced in footnotes by chapter number in bold font, so readers can easily locate the document in Volume 2.

The history is arranged chronologically into eight chapters: Roman religion before the 2nd century BC, changes brought about by Rome's becoming the dominant power in the Mediterranean in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, religion of the late republic in a state of reputed decline, Augustan reforms and the religion of the early Empire, the boundaries of acceptable practice of religion in three centuries of Imperial Rome, alternative cults in the principate, the dissemination of Roman religion outside of Rome in towns with Roman status and without, and the relationship between paganism and Christianity in Rome of the 4th and 5th centuries AD. There are no accounts of Roman religion written before the 1st century BC, so early Roman religion is somewhat conjectural.

The authors don't offer much detail of the particulars of religious ritual. Their focus is on how religion related to Roman society as a whole, the social and political role it played. I found the chapter on acceptable practice particularly insightful, as it describes the ever-changing concepts of what is "religio" versus "superstitio" and religion's role in the evolving view of "Roman-ness", or Roman identity. The co-existence of traditional religion and various foreign cults, including Judaism and Christianity, in the Empire is discussed in some detail and is also especially interesting. The politics surrounding the Christianization of Rome and Christian theological disputes are not treated in detail. Emphasis is on the degrees and ways in which Christianity and paganism co-existed in Christian Rome.

excellent book on the culture of religion in ancient Rome

This is a very worthy tome on the cultural history of religious life in ancient Rome. I suspect the target market comprises academics and university students of ancient history - and it is perhaps for this reason that I found the text dry, though informative and, no doubt, reliable. This is a valuable addition to my library (if it can be called thus) on ancient Roman religion. I do not give it 5 stars because I would have preferred more discussion on the individual Gods themselves (dealt with within their own topic areas).

Beginning with the early cults during the period of monarchy, then republic and empire; Beard, North and Price take an easy to follow and informative route that seeks to examine the religions and cults of Rome and its citizens. With iconographies included, the reader is able to see how the many districts within the empire both adored and loathed the religious institutions of the empire. From the earliest cult imports to pagan giants which were ultimately strangled by emperors dedicated to Christian belief, Religions of Rome is a worthwhile purchase.

William of Ockham (c. 1285-c. 1387) was the most eminent theologian and philosopher of his day, a Franciscan friar who came to believe that the Avignonese papacy of John XXII had set out to destroy the religious ideal on which his order was based: the complete poverty of Christ and the Apostles. About the Author
Raymond Geuss is Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge. He has taught widely in Germany and the United States, and has been an editor of the series of Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought since its inception. His previous books include The Idea of a Critical Theory (Cambridge, 1981, ISBN 0521 284228), Morality, Culture, and History (Cambridge, 1999, ISBN 0 521 635683), and Public Goods, Private Goods (Princeton, 2001). He has also published a collection of classical verse in his own English translations, Parrots, Poets, and Philosophers & Good Advice (London, 1999).

Quentin Skinner is Barber Beaumont Professor of the Humanities at Queen Mary, University of London. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academia Europaea, and a foreign member of many other learned societies. His scholarship, which is available in more than twenty languages, has won him numerous awards, including the Wolfson Prize for History in 1979 and a Balzan Prize in 2006. His books include The Foundations of Modern Political Thought (2 volumes, 1978), Reason and Rhetoric in the Philosophy of Hobbes (1996), Liberty Before Liberalism (1998), Hobbes and Republican Liberty (2008), Forensic Shakespeare (2014) and a three-volume collection of essays, Visions of Politics (2002).

Descartes' Basic Writings

This first volume in a two-volume set contains: (1) Rules for the Direction of our Native Intelligence, (2) Discourse on the Method, (3) Optics, (4) Meditations on First Philosophy (together with Objections and Replies), (5) Principles of Philosophy, (6) Comments on a Certain Broadsheet, and (7) The Passions of the Soul. The only book missing from this great volume is Descartes' Geometry, but given the breadth and depth of the current volume, such an omission is understandable.
The translation is among the very best, with the consistent use of nouns and verbs and direct objects throughout the various texts. The book is accompanied by an excellent index, and an occasional note only when absolutely necessary. The text is allowed to speak for itself, and this it does with aplomb.
My only regret is my copy is not printed on acid-free paper, and after a decade is already beginning to age prematurely. This one complaint aside, this volume is both well written and covers Descartes' best ideas. This particular volume belongs in all serious students' and collegiate libraries.

Translation is excellent and readable, with additional footnotes for further elucidation. Descartes is an important person in Western philosophy and cannot be overlooked, whatever you think of his views. This is a great starting point.

About the Author
John Limon is Associate Professor of English and American Studies at Williams College. He is the author of The Place of Fiction in the Time of Science (1990).

Albert Gelpi is Professor Emeritus of American Literature at Stanford University, California. His previous books include Emily Dickinson: The Mind of the Poet, The Tenth Muse, and A Coherent Splendor. Gelpi has also edited the work of, and written criticism on, a wide range of poets, including Wallace Stevens, Robinson Jeffers, Adrienne Rich, Denise Levertov, Robert Duncan, and William Everson. The Letters of Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov, co-edited with Robert Bertholf, won an award from the MLA as the best scholarly edition of a literary correspondence. Gelpi continues to teach in the Stanford Continuing Studies Program.

Ross Posnock is Anna Garbedian Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University.

This original and important book culminates in a study of Gorbachev's interests, initiatives, and 'new thinking' in relation to overall Soviet foreign policy objectives and the role of the Soviet Union in the region.

A good introduction, but poorly organized.

This book was read by the reviewer for the purposes of introducing the same to the relationship depicted in the title. Coming into the book with knowledge of both sides, but not detailed knowledge of direct relationships, I found to be useful in making connnections but rather weak in detailed analysis and especially orgazation.
Inasmuch as the Middle East is dynamic in itself, the organization of the book into country (Iran...Iraq) and issue (Six Day War...Islam) specific chapters left much overlap and at times seemingly "cut and pasted" analyses that led me to the conclude the book started life as a collection of different specific works. At the same time, it is such a format that affords the innatentive or introductory reader (not necessarily myself) the abilty to grasp the information.
In recommending the book, I think it would be most suitable for one interested in an introduction to the subject, but not one with a background knowledge of the relevant actors discussed. Perhaps for the academic or professional, a more analytical and detailed work could be found.
One possibly an interesting side note, this work written by an Israeli scholar neglects to give much attention to the impact of Soviet-Middle Eastern policy on Soviet-Israeli relations of the same period. Understandibly a work in itself, its absence nonetheless was missed.

great reference

if you want to learn about hertz contact. this is THE book.
i found it really interesting.
organization was sort of weird though, when trying to compare the different cases it can be confusing. if you are working on a problem and looking for an appropriate formula, you have to dig around to make sure all the assumptions were right compared to another very similar formula. but, sort of the nature of the topic.
i cant think of a better book on this subject.

A Highly Recommended Title, as Entry Level Textbook

Excellent review of Hertzian and Non-Hertzian Contact problems. I highly recommend this book for those who are having their first contact with the subject. Grad students will find it useful and clear, but I'm not sure that undergrads will have an easy time handling the book, or the subject, for that matter.
