A great classic of the evolutionary literature

John H. Ryskamp's "review" is gibberish from beginning to end, and tells us nothing of value about the book, but Mj Dos Reis Barros's review sums it up well.

Motoo Kimura was one of the major evolutionary theorists of the 20th century, and his neutral theory is an essential component for understanding molecular evolution. In particular, he explained why studies of proteins and genes show little evidence of natural selection, whereas studies of whole organisms show a great deal. In essence, biochemical function is much the same in a huge array of organisms, and once a particular protein has arrived at a structure that is very well adapted to its function there is not much selective pressure for it to evolve further. Consequently the evolution that we see is mainly the result of errors that have little or no effect on function, i.e. the result of neutral mutations. This does not, however, exclude negative selection to eliminate mutations that are definitely harmful. We can see this clearly in gene sequences: in many codons the third base can be changed without affecting the amino acid coded for, and thus with no effect on the protein that results, whereas this is not the case for changes in the first and second bases. In accordance with the neutral theory coupled with negative selection, therefore, comparisons between genes coding for the same protein in different organisms show far higher mutation rates for the third base than for the others.

The neutral theory is sometimes claimed by creationists as evidence against natural selection, so it is important to understand that Kimura saw it as nothing of the kind. His position was much more subtle and thoroughly argued than this crude caricature, and he wrote that "[Darwin's] theory of natural selection still remains as the only scientifically acceptable to explain why organisms are so well adaptred to their environments". The point is that Darwin was concerned with organisms and Kimura was concerned with genes: the two are, of course, related to one another, but they are not the same thing.

Another misconception comes from the idea, not only among creationists but also among people who should know better, that the approximately constant rate of change per year (rather than per generation) constitutes an argument against the neutral theory. However, Kimura was perfectly well aware of this constancy when he first proposed the theory, and he discusses it, and his interpretation of it, in detail in his book.

In the quarter century that has passed since the book was written our knowledge of gene sequences has increased immeasurably, but surprisingly little would need to be revised if it were being revised today. It remains one of the great classics of the evolutionary literature.

This book is a true classic that still has high relevance nowdays and it is continuosly cited in the research literature. The mathematical elegance of this theory is breathtaking, and any student comtemplating a research life in molecular evolution must read it.

This book is a classic and anybody who is considering a career in molecular genetics should read this book thoroughly and take time to reflect on its meaning. It is well written and the ideas and exposition are excellent. The theory is now best described as "null hypothesis" that one should now test your (much more easily obtained) genomic data against. Unfortunately, many current geneticists are not formally taught this material.

About the Author
Rodney Huddleston graduated from the University of Cambridge in Modern & Medieval Languages in 1960, and earned his PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh in 1963. He held lectureships at the University of Edinburgh, University College London and the University of Reading, before moving in 1969 to the Department of English at the University of Queensland, where he worked until formally retiring in 1998. He was the winner of one of three Excellence in Teaching' awards at the University of Queensland in 1988, and in 1990 was awarded a Personal Chair. He has written numerous articles and books on English grammar, including An Introduction to English Transformational Syntax (1976) and Introduction to the Grammar of English (1984), and was the founding editor of The Australian Journal of Linguistics (1980--1985).

Neither a learner's grammar nor a reference grammar.

This book presents a progressive model of English grammar that has many deviant features. For example, contractions such as "can't" and "shouldn't", traditionally regarded as two words, are combined into one. In other words, Huddleston treats the clitic "n't" as an inflexion. On the other hand, and equally as controversial, " 's" indicating possession is treated not as an inflexion, but rather, as a clitic.
In this book, Huddleston has created a highly fanciful, not to mention radical, model of English grammar, with scant regard for traditional grammar. As an example, Huddleston has created a hodge-podge class he calls 'determinatives' based on a very slender thread of reasoning. This "part of speech" includes words traditionally determiners, e.g., the articles 'the' and 'a', possessive adjectives, e.g., 'his', 'my', 'their', demonstrative adjectives 'this', 'those', quantitative adjectives like 'few', 'all', etc. This melting pot of words from divers classes are tenuously combined into one class.
That is not to say the book has no merits. Huddleston makes a few valuable distinctions in English grammar hitherto ignored, such as that between the form and the function of a word.
In addition, the book describes a theoretically interesting, if capricious, model of English grammar, which although in the main deserving of derision, nonetheless has some novel and practical aspects.
This book is definitely not for those who which to learn English grammar, nor is it useful as a reference grammar. Its chief use is as an abstract theoretical model to serve as a battlefield for academic and linguistic wars. It has little pedagogical value.

Difficult to read and not didactic at all

I bought this book because it was recommended by the lecturer of an undergraduate course in English grammar at the University of Cologne, Germany.
This book didn't help me at all, though. When looking in Huddleston's grammar I mostly felt that I understood less than I had already understood before. "English Grammar - An Outline" proved confusing rather than helpful.
I'm not so much complaining about what is written in this book, but how it is written and how the the matter is presented:
- too complicated
- too condensed
- too few examples
- almost no diagrams to visualize concepts/problems
- barely any tables to give a structured overview of what's being talked about
- no solutions to the exercises
- no glossary
Although I have a keen interest in grammar, grammatical theory, the English language and linguistics in general, I had to force myself to read this book - and I finally gave up. Nevertheless, I still believe that grammar - even on a theoretical/academic level - can be presented in a clear, accessible and interesting way.
Perhaps this book is best suited to feed academic debate about certain issues of English grammar - as a previous reviewer already pointed out - but certainly not "for students who may have no previous knowledge of linguistics and little familiarity with 'traditional' grammar" as the publishers suggest.

Difficult but educative

This book is difficult to read. The material is on a high level. And it is very theoretic. However, you'll learn some important linguistic consepts and some information is indeed indespensible.

Although I am not studying the North American version,but the original version for the UK, I thought that I would place my views here. I am an adult independent Latin learner, currently involved in a project with the Cambridge School Classics Project, which involves learning Latin via the internet. I have completed Book 1, and am near to the end of Book 2. Our tutor places work each week on the Webboard for us to complete over the week.
I have given the course 4 stars, because as a reading course, it gives an excellent basic grounding. Once the emphasis of the course is appreciated, then it is easier to cope with the frustration sometimes of not having every aspect of grammar explained as one reads the texts. I guess it would be very different if a student was looking for help at the emphasis in translating from English into Latin. There is a lot of reading material in the Stages of the Books, and I have found that I am assimilating far more of the grammar by reading the numerous texts.
If one is patient then eventually all the points of grammar that are encountered in the texts are explained. I have learnt, that for myself, it is important sometimes to remain in a place of not knowing everything that is encountered, as it has given me the impetus to keep pushing myself forward. I have been studying the 2 books part-time over the past year, and a credit for the Cambridge Course is that I have not given up, as I have with other Latin textbooks.
I hope to start Book 3 shortly.

Pursuing the theme of the combination of religious joy and illumination with violence, Professor Bloch explains how, at various times, the circumcision ceremony can be a familial ritual as well as glorification of a militarist and expansionist state, or associated with anti-colonial nationalism. Describing changes that have occurred in the form of the ritual over two centuries, Professor Bloch argues that in order to understand the properties of ritual in general, it is necessary to view it over a longer time scale than anthropologists have tended to do previously. Adopting such an historical perspective enables him to identify the stability of the Merina ritual's symbolic content, despite changes in its organisation, and dramatically changing politico-economic contexts. About the Author
Maurice Bloch, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics, is one of the world's leading anthropologists. He has held a number of academic positions at universities around the world and is currently an associate member of the Institut Jean Nicod of the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris engaged in an interdisciplinary research project on comparative epistemics funded by the European Science Foundation. He has published widely on his research interests and his work has been translated into twelve languages. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1990.

About the Author
Malkiel taught for over fifty years at the University of California at Berkeley. He holds honorary degrees from the Universities of Chicago, Illinois, Georgetown, Paris, Berlin, Oxford and Salamanca.
