British Intel from D-Day to VE-Day

This is again an excellent review of what the British intel knew prior to D-Day and through the end of the war. Of course, at this point they were 5 years into the war so they had a much better handle on things than in 1939 and 1940 (see Volume 1). The book covers the good, the bad and the uncertain. As usual, intel sources came up with a variety of different estimates of things such as the V-Weapon program of Germany. It was interesting to know that some significant intel came from diplomatic sources. This is the first volume that I can remember addressing the German A-Bomb effort (which wasn't much). It is not nearly as thorough as Alsos, but it is something. There is a lot today that can be learned from what happened in the past (and what was not done). The British are excellent at thorough documentation, and this is a great source.

Their discovery of the fundamental ambiguity of such intuition is discussed in relation to some ideas of Empson, Gombrich, and Ehrenzweig. As well as an essay in criticism, this is a contribution to the history of ideas, drawing together points in the background of philosophical and psychological theory from Hartley and Wesley to John Stuart Mill. About the Author
Stephen Prickett is Professor of English at Duke University, North Carolina. Prior to this he was Regius Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Glasgow. He took his BA at Cambridge (Trinity Hall) and subsequently did postgraduate work in Oxford (University College) and back in Cambridge, where he took his PhD in 1968. Previous appointments include the Chair of English at the Australian National University in Canberra (1983 9), and teaching posts at the Universities of Sussex (1967 82), Minnesota (1979 80), and Smith College, Massachusetts(1970 1). Aarhus University, Denmark (1997) and Singapore (1999). He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, former Chairman of the UK Higher Education Foundation, President of the European Society for the Study of Literature and Theology, and of the George MacDonald Society. He has published one novel, thirteen monographs, some seventy five articles on Romanticism, Victorian Studies and related topics, especially on literature and theology, including Coleridge and Wordsworth: The Poetry of Growth (1970), Romanticism and Religion: The Tradition of Coleridge and Wordsworth in the Victorian Church (1976), Victorian Fantasy (1978), The Romantics (ed.) (1981), Words and the Word: Language, Poetics and Biblical Interpretation (1986), Reading the Text: Biblical Criticism and Literary Theory (ed. 1991), and Origins of Narrative: the Romantic Appropriation of the Bible (1996). He is also joint author (with Robert Barnes) of the volume on the Bible for the Cambridge University Press Landmarks of World Literature Series (1991), and joint editor (with Robert Carroll) of the Oxford University Press World's Classics Bible (1997) and (with David Jasper) of the new Blackwells Reader in Literature and Religion (1999). He is General Editor of the Macmillan Romanticism in Perspective Series, and editorial consultant to the Oxford Bible Commentary Series and to Blackwells Bible Commentaries.

Also, the book draws the parallel between optimal control theory and static optimization. No previous knowledge of differential equations is required.

One of the more useful texts

Purchased this text for a graduate dynamic optimization in economics course at Rice. It is very well written with excellent examples. Did quite a few problems, they are well designed to illuminate the topics covered. Almost no useful coverage of numerical methods, which is what I most wanted to take away from the course. The emphasis is on theory, there is a decent section on static optimization and differential equations. Wish we could have used this text for math-econ rather than Rudin, it is more practical for applied economists (I'm doing a marketing PhD) who don't do heavy theory work that require the real-analysis machinery. Overall, an excellent text if you are not looking for numerical methods. I would suggest Adda and Cooper and Judd for application with numerical methods.

I am almoust sure that mathematicians and "orthodox" economists do not like this book but for graduates with a lousy background in and a certain degree of fear of mathematics it is a perfect tool to begin and get affected.

An amazing account of how a company rose to power.

David Hounshell and John Smith do an excellent job of not only recounting the thorough history of Du Pont's R&D but they also give a wonderful synopsis of how R&D developed as a whole during the time period. Du Pont suffered through organization issues when the three cousins took the company over at the end of the 19th century. They were able to develop an organization system and two areas for R&D. These areas would help to produce some of the fundamental research that allowed the company to move forward. They would be essential for developing dyes during World War 1 and Rayon in the time following. The development of nylon was achieved through hard chemical work and a dedication to pure science that came out of these labs during the 1930's. These products would flourish both before and after World War II making Du Pont a signature company that clearly dominated the markets.
World War II represented a dilemma for Du Pont. While being accused of war profiteering in World War I the executives were determined to avoid this fate in the second war. Du Pont did its work at cost and was essential in developing the Hanford Labs in Washington which made the plutonium for several bombs. This was turned over to the government at the end of the contract. Du Pont did not want to be involved in any government work and found themselves continually sucked back in. After the war it did try to become involved in pharmaceuticals but failed to realize the potential for a sales force and could not be competitive. Plastics and fibers would be the big winners after the war until the mid 1960's where even these reliable products began to falter. The research and development teams went back to the drawing board and looked for opportunities. While that is still being played out the biggest winner was in X-ray film. The Du Pont film proved stronger than Eastman Kodak giving them an edge.
Overall this is the most thorough account of Du Pont I have come across. This book not only serves to show how Du Pont developed R&D through decentralization and good corporate governance but shows the model that major companies began to adopt. It is incredibly detailed in its narrative although be warned this is for those who really want to learn about business and technology. It is not a light historical read that will be enjoyed by all. If you really are into technology or business though this is an essential book to read. It is a little hard to get through at times with some of the scientific jargon but otherwise it is a five star book.

The approach of the book, with its emphasis on broad social and economic trends across large areas and long time periods, does much to throw light on Latin America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as well.

About the Author
James Lockhart, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles, is the author of Spanish Peru, 1532–1560 and several substantial articles on the theory and practice of Latin American social history. He previously taught at Colgate University and the University of Texas, and has served as associate editor of the Hispanic American Historical Review.

Stuart B. Schwartz is the George Burton Adams Professor of History and chair of the Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies at Yale University. His many books include "All Can Be Saved: Religious Tolerance and Salvation in the Iberian Atlantic World."

Stuart B. Schwartz is George Burton Adams Professor of History at Yale University. Key figure in the transition from Aristotle to Mathematics - Newton's teacher and friend

Feingold spends a lot of time on the politics of Cambridge. Useful if interested in background. Shows the concern of Barrow and others for the new influence of Decarte on the students. Good quote of Barrow saying that Decarte's science is based on mental construction not drawn from experience. Today Cartesianism still has strong grip on western culture, even though Newton disproved it.

Page 28 quotes Barrow on Decarte, "it sends good to him, not to learn from things, but to impose his own laws on things. First, he collected and set up metaphysical truths which he considered suitable to his theory from notions implanted in his own mind. . . next from these he descended into general principles of nature; and then generally advanced to particulars explicable from principales which, forsooth, he had framed without consulting nature." Pure rationalism. The English took the lead in offering alternatives to Decarte. This formed the basis of the scientific revolution.

Page 54 Feingold explains Barrow's thought, "Barrow's form of rational theology was already in an advanced stage, for it anticipates his subsequent preaching that the foundation of religion lies on ground as solid and rational as mathematics." Mathematics is the religion still accepted today. These men understood it is an act of faith to trust mathematics. They meditated on the foundations of thought. Not understood in today's culture. A carefully reasoned faith in mathematics has become a blind, unreasonable superstition. Used in ways that these men would never approve.

He then quotes a prayer Barrow puy on his manuscript of Apollonius:
"how great it geometrician art thou, O Lord! For a while this science has no bounds, while there is forever room for the discovery of new theorems , even by human faculties. . . Whence it is that in so many men are almost so many minds. But in these geometrical theorems all man are agreed."

John Duton commented in Barrow, " There is without doubt but a very few men, amongst those reasons which induce them to wish for heaven, give this, of expecting the happiness of a perfect knowledge of the mathematics there." Math was taking a leading place in the search for eternal truth that could bring peace to society.

Quotes john Hall, a student, referring to mathematics ; "and recall men's minds by delicate ravishing contemplations, from the sordid juggling use of those instruments on which now so perversely unanimously doat." Math was developing into the new religion.

Barrow traveled to Turkey and spent some months there. Studied Islam. Later commented; "a mass of absurd opinions, odd stories, and uncouth ceremonies, compounded chiefly of the doings of Christian heresies, together with some ingredients of Judaism and paganism, confusedly jumbled or unskillfully tempered together." This is a man who read the Bible in Hebrew and Greek. He could compare Islam and Christianity with insight.

In his 40's left Cambridge to preach. Grew to the opinion that Christianity is the basis for future hope, not mathematics. Friends worked to assign him to important position due to his learning and piety. Known as the foremost preacher in England. He became the Chaplin to Charles II. He was called 'the exhaustive preacher' by Charles because when he was done explaining a theme, there was nothing left to say.

His analysis of Christian doctrine still interesting. Defended free will against the Calvinists and the determinists. Gave a famous sermon on "Evil Speaking". Detailed analysis of gossip, slander, injurious speech and so on using Biblical texts.

Not an easy read. Written for scholars. Lots of detail and copious footnotes. A good reference book.
