A Fascinating Look at Life in SW Germany in the Early Modern Era

The book arrived on time in the condition as advertised. I would use this book seller again. The topic of the book is very interesting, even though the topic, life in Wurttemberg in the early modern era, is rather specialized. It nontheless is well written and an a fascinating study which helps me understand my ancestors life in this corner of Germany

Early Modern Culture in Wuerttemberg

David Sabean has done extensive work in the archives in Stuttgart, providing a valuable service to those of us who can't travel to Germany. This book goes well with his other two books, "Kinship in Neckarhausen, 1700-1870," and "Property, Production and Family in Neckarhausen, 1700-1870." My family is from a very small Lutheran town about 20 miles from Neckarhausen and I found Sabean's descriptions of the daily life of that era not only entertaining, but quite valuable in gaining an understanding of my heritage. (I'm working on my genealogy.)
Basically, this book and the other two are about ordinary people who lived in Neckarhausen, Wuerttemberg, from 1700-1870. Sabean has made extensive use of court records and written histories. Having read a lot of handwritten parish registers from that time period, I truly appreciate the work that went into this research.
Sabean's style sometimes reads like a sociology textbook. "Power in the Blood" doesn't suffer from this as much as his other two books do. Even so, I give "Power in the Blood" 5 stars for even-handed historical documentation.
