Liquid Metals contains more a description of the author's own work in the area than an overview of the theory of liquid metals. At least one third of the bibliography is work, published elsewhere, by the author and in itself cannot provide a candid description of the subject - being so self-referential. I would advise the reader to approach the theory of liquid metals from the point of view of Hansen and McDonald's 'Theory of Simple liquids' and then move on to the books of Shimoji or Faber, dealing with the topic at hand. The dynamics of the liquid state is also much better described in Balucani and Zoppi. If you have a particular interest in the work of the author then, perhaps, this book would be of interest to you.

They support the general thesis that policy in Italy is characterized by a complex interaction of state, market and social regulation, rather than by a general trend away from state intervention. Greek texts, excellent commentaries, no translations...

Well...
If you want a very good anthology of Hellenistic
poetry, with the Greek texts available for your
own translation, and excellent commentaries and
notes -- then this is your volume.
There is a total of 81 pages of Greek texts of
poems -- pp. 83 to 274 are detailed, highly
interesting, and enlightening commentaries on
the wordings, allusions, and implications in
the various poems, delivered with scholarly
insight, interest, verve, and never dullness.
Example -- here is a commentary on a Greek
word in an excerpt from Apollonius' epic
poem, -Argonautica, Book 4-, concerning Talos:
[astar/aulios]"the homing star". "This is a
good example of Ap.'s allusion to Homeric
philological problems." The editor then goes
on to give the quote in Greek, as well as
telling how Homer uses the word poetically,
and then how Apollonius changes the order of
his use of the word in his own poetic foot
placement. The relation to "aulios" is explained
as meaning "it brings relief to wretched plough-
men, i.e., signals their return home. Nor is
this mere pedantry: the 'gloss' is particularly
apt, since 'ploughing the sea' is a common
metaphor for rowing. The ploughmaen can rest;
but the heroes' work is only just begun."
The other notes in the commentaries are just
as insightful and interesting and enrich the
appreciation of the pieces.
The only drawback, at this price, for the
general readership is the fact that with all
this richness of detail and scholarly insight,
there are no translations. This book is meant
for students of Greek to use as a text for study
or class work. General readers would greatly
benefit, as would non-Greek reading scholars,
if only the translations had been supplied as
well.
The poets covered with various poems, pieces,
and excerpts are: Callimachus, Cleanthes, Aratus,
Nicander, Theocritus, Simias, Phanocles, Apollonius,
Moschus, Bion, Rhianus, Lycophron, Herondas, Machon,
as well as Epigrams, and Drinking Song.
There are also 4 pages of maps and a very good
Introduction.

Great! Not exactly what I was looking for because I thought this was the actual Greek (Palatine) Anthology. It's not but it's still a great text and great quality

Wonderful Book for Tunnel Engineers and Everyone Interested in the Tunneling Industry

I have been working in the tunneling industry for over 40 years but this wonderful book gave me fresh insights into my industry. West has a gift for writing crisp clear text which is often missing in writing on technical topics. His references at the end of each chapter provides invaluable sources of new information. I applaud him for writing this facinating book.

An interesting and fresh historical perspective.

Hugh Kearney argues that the history of the British Isles can not be properly understood by simply considering a single 'national' interpretation. The first five chapters of his book consider Celtic society, the Roman invasion, post-Roman centuries, Viking settlements and the Norman invasion - all within the context of the British Isles. The later chapters continue with the same approach, and bring a fresh perspective on well known events such as the 'English' civil war, the various Acts of Union (Wales in 1536, Scotland in 1707, and Ireland in 1800), the formation of the Irish Free State and the two world wars.

Better as a "reference" volume, I think

I admit it - I haven't finished this book yet. I find it hard slogging, despite the fact that I am interested in British history and want to learn more about it. I am surprised to find that one trade review referred to the book as "fast-moving". I do not find it to be so. But then, maybe I am just not enough of an historian to go for this. The book is very complete, as far as I can tell. But it's really not exciting reading - it would work well if a person needed the information for reference or something, but I prefer my histories to have more of a narrative thread to them than this one. It's not *bad*, just not as engaging as some other history books. Perhaps this one was not intended for the "general reader".

A good place to start British studies!

Kearney is one of the first modern scholars to break away from the English historical model and confront the history of Ireland Scotland, and Wales as they correlate with England. His ideas on the English insistence of cultural superiority are spot on in a historiographical context. DNA evidence has indeed shown that people of the Four Nations share a common geneology dating back to the last land bridge that connected the Island to the mainland. Some Jute, Danish, Norwegian, and Friscian DNA is found in certain areas; but around 80% of the gene pool remains native. It is surprising the level of cultural suppression that occurred against the Irishry, Welshry and Scottani on grounds that they were an inferior race in light of such information. All in all Kearney represents a new era of British scholarship. The only critique I can offer is that "celtic" migration theory has been disposed of in recent years. Crafts that show Celtic influence were generally copies of mainland items or rarely merchant trades between Ireland and Gaul. Otherwise, it is an excellent read!

Excellent look at Johannine Theology

This is by far the best book in the "New Testamant Theology" series put out so far by Cambridge University Press.
It is difficult to discern whether my adoration for this book comes from the inherent wonder and complexity of Johannine thought or Smith's rendering of that thought, but without a doubt the author's explanation is superb.
I was afraid that, given the table of contents for this book, it would follow the same pattern as most the others - the cookie cutter four chapter progression of introduction, theology, relation to NT and then relevance for today. Instead, Smith I think actualizes perhaps the intent of such a set up without being bound by that structure alone.
He begins by introducing the world of Johannine theology (which is at least discussed by scholars in terms and explanations in stark contrast to the way Pauline scholars cover their material) and then begins to discuss such issues as author and setting. Then, however, he reverses direction by acknowledging that such debates have not yielded much insight and then attempts to gain similar information by looking at the setting and sources of Johannine theology. This he does in three ways: 1) looking at the general religious setting of the ancient world with which John has contacts 2) looking at the narrative setting (and thus taking a brief journey through the scope of the story) by trying to peer behind the given story to the story of the community to which it pertains and 3) looking at how John as a document relates to Judaism and other major streams of NT thought.
The third chapter covers the themes of John's theology by first analyzing his presuppositions. The idea of Jesus Christ as God's revelation then orders the continuing look by dividing the book into the revelation to the world and then the community (of believers). Through this Smith shows how John perceives Jesus to be not only the anointed one of God but also the exact image and word (logos) of that God, God incarnate as a way of understanding and relating to God.
Finally, the fourth chapter looks at John's relevance by addressing three issues - mythology (how his theology relates to modern thought world), anti-semitism (how his theology relates to other religions, esp. Judaism) and essence of Christianity (how his theology understands itself). Such a look is wonderfully useful and insightful and fulfills the promise of understanding a letter's relevance for Christians today.
Smith uncovers in his survey the view that in John Christianity becomes most fully "Christian" by its obsession with the person and centrality of Jesus Christ. In doing so, it marks the transition from the amalgam of primitive Jewish Messianism found in Jesus to Christianity and Judaism. Furthermore, it is shown how John more than any other NT writer directs and orders his whole worldview around the Christ event and provides meaning, ethics, and theology of purely Christian terms.
This is an excellent overview and survey of Johannine thought. I only wish every book in this series was so masterfully written.

John in a very dense nutshell
By John M. Thompson
A detailed look at John, placing the gospel in the context of early Christianity and an evolving theology. When appropriate, contrasts John with the synoptic gospels and Paul. For its size, and particularly in comparison with many other commentaries, probably the best available.
