Averil Cameron is professor emeritus of late antique and Byzantine history at the University of Oxford and former warden of Keble College, Oxford. Her books include "The Mediterranean World in Late Antiquity", "The Byzantines", and "The Later Roman Empire".

Michael Whitby is Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick. He is the co-editor of Volume XIV of The Cambridge Ancient History (2001) and author of Rome at War, AD 293 696 (2002) as well as several articles on late Roman warfare, and has made several television appearances talking about ancient warfare from the Graeco-Persian Wars to the collapse of the Roman Empire.

A very good, up-to-date overview

This review concerns the volume of the Cambridge Ancient history covering 425-600.

This was a very readable book, that I have just completed. I read about eighty percent of it, only skipping or skimmimg a few sections. Admittedly, this would not make a good introductory book, and probably not even a good second book, on the period, but if you are interested in the period and have a working knowledge of it, I am sure you will find much of interest. The book begins with an evocative 150 pages or so of narrative historical overview, with the latest interpretations of chronology. Some of this material is then covered in a more thematic way, and also in an area-by-area manner, later in the book. There are also many sections on various social aspects. One such that I gained much from was the one on education. Interestingly, there was no separate section on women. The bibliography is 100 pages long, so the reading matter itself is about 1000 pages. The book was worth the money to me.

Combining Humor and Theory for ESL Instruction

Unlike the majority of TESL texts, Swales manages to treat his discipline with respect while not becoming pretentious or defensive about the lack of research backing most of the theories. His combination of humor and anecdotal examples with clear theories reminded me of Alder and Van Doren's "How to Read a Book": personable, enjoyable, and clear principles that will make experts in the field nod in agreement while providing graduate students with plenty of research topics.

A must have!

Now in its second printing, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in doing genre analysis, especially in the fields of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Second Language (L2) writing. Almost any article on the subject that has appeared in print within the past 20 years cites Swales at least once, and more likely multiple times. His IMRD (Introduction-Methods-Research-Discussion) structure, moves analysis model, and mixed-methods approach have all been tremendously influential. At the same time, Swales emphasizes commonalities with other fields like Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and New Rhetoric that may allow for more cross-disciplinary collaboration and, ideally, greater insights into the ways in which genres both shape and are given shape by the writing we do.

Amazingly comprehensive and deep.

Swale's Genre Analysis provides a holistic and refreshing view of the ever-developing fields of English language learning and teaching, and academic discourse. Although this work was published over 20 years ago, it remains strongly in force providing theoretical and practical bases about the importance of concepts like genres, texts, register, functional grammar, discourse community, task, communication in EFL, ESL and EL1 teaching/learning.

Professor Przeworski examines the three principal choices confronted by socialism: whether to work through elections; whether to rely exclusively on the working class; and whether to try to reform or abolish capitalism. He brings to his analysis a number of abstract models of political and economic structure, and illustrates the issues in the context of historical events, tracing the development of socialist strategies since the mid-nineteenth century. Several of the conclusions are novel and provocative. Professor Przeworski argues that economic issues cannot justify a socialist programme, and that the workers had good reasons to struggle for the improvement of capitalism. Therefore, the project of a socialist transformation, and the fight for economic advancement, were separate historical phenomena.

A modern classic of political economy

This book is a classic of "rational-choice Marxism," which enjoyed brief success in the 1980s. It took seriously the methodological approaches of mainstream economics and political science while grounded in Marx's normative concerns, critique of capitalism, and some of his theory of history.

Here Przeworski is concerned to think about the political economy of a social democratic movement in a modern capitalist economy. He examines three central choices: whether to pursue socialism through elections or from outside the political system; whether to rely exclusively on the working class for support or to dilute their political agenda by making alliances with other classes and groups; and whether to reform capitalism or overthrow it.

His analysis is theoretically sharp, open to multiple forms of evidence, deeply informed by the history of social democracy, and always concerned with political choices. Though subject to various critiques, most visibly those of Gøsta Esping-Andersen, it's a model for any political economist.

Przeworskis book is an attemp to revitalize maybe the most reliable of marxist theories: Antonio Gramcsis theory of hegemony. Even if the rest of the marxist theory is dead, there still is an hegemonic project, namely that of the right wing. That is why Przeworkis answer, to use modern economic theories to descripe the old project of the left, namely the welfare state is very important if left is to go on counter attac against neoliberalism. And Przeworski even offers alternative economic theory to present day free market thinking. The left has alternatives and you can learn from the past in building them.

If you are an absent-minded student of politics, read any of Huntington's books, and you'll like it. If you are just an ordinary student of political science, read any of text books, and you'll learn something from it. But If you think you are a serious student of social sciences, read any of Przeworski's books, and you'll be impressed with disillusionment. is the masterpiece among his works, increadibly smart, highly sophisticated, and provocative. Had Karl Marx read this book, he would have had no choice but to revise his famous book.
