A Fresh Perspective

For all the talk about the current "crisis" in our schools, few new perspectives on the cause(s) of that crisis have been offered in recent years. On the one side, conservatives rail that "higher standards," meaning higher standardized test scores (and "back-to-basics" curricula), should be required. Liberals rail that higher teacher pay, lower class sizes, and higher expenditures per-pupil are necessary. Both arguments are neither new nor groundbreaking.
Martin Covington attacks the school "crisis" from the perspective of student motivation for learning. His argument is that our current "crisis" is due to a severe lack of motivation to learn on the part of our students: A problem he feels can be overcome by teachers/schools. He exposes the problems of the traditional, competitive motivational framework and for whom this model is ineffective and why. He explores at depth - and with insightful research - the differences in attribution of success and of failure between students, the essence of self-worth theory, and the effects of these differences on student motivation to learn (for example, "I failed because I'm dumb" as opposed to "I failed because I was sick"). Finally, Covington offers ideas on how to motivate the current plethora of amotivated students.
In all, a fantastic book, even if the first 60-80 pages are a bit dry (the history of perspectives on motivation is perhaps dull to all but the most narrow specialist). Plod through them, and by the middle - if you have any interest in education, our schools, or our children - you will be engrossed. By the end, you will amost assuredly transform your views on why our schools are "failing" and how that failure could be changed. An absolute essential for everybody who claims to be interested in improving our schools.

About the Author
Maureen N. McLane was educated at the Universities of Harvard, Oxford, and Chicago. She is the author of Same Life: Poems (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008) and Romanticism and the Human Sciences: Poetry, Population and the Discourse of the Species (Cambridge University Press, 2000; Paperback, 2006). She is also co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to British Romantic Poetry (Cambridge University Press, 2008). A contributing editor at the Boston Review, she was for years the chief poetry critic of the Chicago Tribune, and her articles on poetry, contemporary fiction, teaching, and sexuality have appeared in many venues, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, American Poet, the Poetry Foundation website, The Boston Globe, The Boston Phoenix, the Chicago Review, and the Harvard Review. In 2003 she won the National Book Critics Circle's Nona Balakian Award for Excellence in Book Reviewing, and in 2007 she was elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the NBCC. She has taught at Harvard University, the University of Chicago, MIT, and the East Harlem Poetry Project, and is currently an Associate Professor in the English Department at NYU. Exceptionally good book; but make sure this is what you need

This book is intended to provide us with a short (135 pages), down to earth and fluently motivated introduction to algebraic geometry. And it does a great job. While the author does not clearly state his intentions in advance, I think it would be safe to assume that this is meant to accompany a more standard text on the subject (Hartshorne, Harris, Shafarevich, etc), and that the author's main goal was to give the quickest possible route to the heart of the subject, making sure the reader stays interested throughout rather than that he is presented with the firmest logical structure. I would like to stress that despite of what I wrote so far, this book does present rigorous proofs and clear definitions.

The style is friendly, straightforward and unpretentious. Everything is well motivated, and one occasionally gets to hear the author's personal perspective or view about a certain topic. I will quote two examples. When discussing the Zariski topology, the author writes "The Zariski topology may cause trouble to some students; since it is only being used as a language, and has almost no content, the difficulty is likely to be psychological rather than technical". This was very calming for me to read, as I have been previously struggling with the "deep meaning" of the Zariski topology, and no book has had the honesty to tell me that I shouldn't worry that much about it. As a second example of the author's style, after a Q.E.D. in page 53 the author explains that "The proof of (b) is a typical algebraist's proof: it's logically very neat, but almost completely hides the content: the real point is that ..."

Chapter 1 begins with the concrete example of conics, intended to motivate the later definitions of the projective plane. Next elliptic curves and their group law is discussed. The chapter ends with a brief survey of the genus of curves.

Chapter 2 is more technical; its purpose is to build the algebraic foundations needed for Hilbert's Nullstellensatz. Among topics covered are Noetherian rings, Hilbert's Basis Theorem, algebraic sets, the Zariski topology, prime ideals and a nice motivation for the Nullstellensatz. Next coordinate rings, morphisms, varieties and other standard topics are introduced.

Chapter 3, titled "Applications", uses the previous material to discuss some nice geometric topics. I especially enjoyed the section on the 27 lines on a cubic surface.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone not very familiar with algebraic geometry; for instance, it could be a good reading to decide if you want to take a more serious study (e.g. a university course) of the subject. If I were to suggest only one text for someone who just wants to know what algebraic geometry is all about, it would definitely be this one.

Unreadable but well-organized

It is difficult to see who this book is aimed at. Perhaps the extremely gifted undergraduate who can fill in sketchy, incomplete, difficult proofs, but has also taken courses? My professor (a topologist) even had a difficult time presenting the material as-is and solving the exercises, as very few examples were given, hence it was unclear exactly what was required for a satisfactory proof of the questions as stated. Reid, probably in an effort to save space, delegates difficult steps of proofs to the reader by declaring them "obvious," making the book practically unreadable to the average undergraduate student. The notation is used strangely and the typesetting is awkward.

The proof of the 27-lines theorem is interesting and a decent capstone for the introductory subject. However, I did not feel as though I had deepened my knowledge of algebraic geometry as a result, only having learned the bare minimum to approach one useless (albeit entertaining) theorem.

If you have to use this book I recommend buying another one to supplement the background knowledge and to figure out how to complete the proofs.

Very Ambitious

I picked this up as a self study entry point into the subject. Its a short read, but not terse at all, just a bit less formal than the more rigorous graduate level texts (I consider this book ambitious since this is generally considered a graduate level topic). Rather than throwing several complicated ideas at you and leaving it up to you to make sense of it all, it dives straight to the conclusions of what the author considers most important ideas. While some commutative algebra is an obvious prerequisite, I found myself having to backtrack a bit and take some detours into projective geometry. This text isn't intended to get you far, its just a starting point, and a great one at that considering its undergraduate level audience.

In 1886, the last time a task of this scale was approached, August Hirsch was able to compile the Handbook of Geographical and Historical Pathology (New Syndenham Society, 1883-86) on his own; now, because of the knowledge explosion, it has taken 150 authors. In an attempt to provide an exhaustive and definitive world history of human disease and to document the present state of knowledge for the future, editor Kiple has brought together contributions from medical specialists, historians, anthropologists, and other researchers. Emphasis, however, is on Western medicine. Divided into eight parts, the volume consists of 218 chapters, each two to 15 pages in length, written by specialists but easily accessible to lay readers. Each article is followed by an extensive and useful bibliography. Part 1 offers an overview of the history of disease from prehistory to the present. Part 2 covers human understanding of the concept of disease. Part 3 chronicles genetics and the rise of nontraditional Western specialties such as chiropractic medicine and public health projects. Part 4 presents a demographic approach to disease. Parts 5 through 7 look at disease from a geographical perspective. Part 8, a little more than half the book at 560 pages, is a detailed description of the history and present state of 158 separate diseases, from AIDS to yellow fever. This is an ideal source for reference questions, term papers, hard research data, and clinical background. Highly recommended.

Medical geography and the role that pathogens have played in shaping history are increasingly of interest to researchers. For example, scholars study how the diseases brought to the Americas by the explorers shaped the future of this part of the world.

The last time an attempt was made to document disease as a maker of history was in the nineteenth century, when August Hirsch published his Handbook of Geographical and Historical Pathology. The Cambridge World History of Human Disease updates what was recorded more than a century ago. It is both a history and an encyclopedia of disease. The first seven sections present the history; section 8 is the encyclopedia of "Major Human Diseases Past and Present." Each chapter in these sections is separately authored and provides interesting accounts of research findings.

The first four sections provide background information on concepts of disease, special categories of diseases, and methods of measuring health. The next three discuss disease in different parts of the world during different periods of time (e.g., "Diseases of Antiquity in Japan," "Diseases of the Islamic World"). The remaining half of the book covers individual diseases from AIDS to yellow fever. Coverage is not limited to infectious diseases. There are entries on Down syndrome, epilepsy, and hypertension, for example. For each is provided information on clinical manifestations, distribution, cause, and treatment. The final part of each entry discusses the history and medical geography of the disease: how widespread it was during recorded history, and how and why it spread. This part of the book is fascinating reading for the educated layperson. Extensive bibliographies of medical literature are found at the end of each chapter. Distribution maps are provided for some diseases, tables or charts for others.

Personal-name and subject indexes conclude the book. A useful aspect of the name index is that thumbnail biographical sketches are provided for the more prominent scientists. The subject index is detailed, providing a multitude of access points.

This monumental compilation should serve as a starting point for anyone working in medical geography or the history of medicine. As a reference book, the encyclopedic portion will be quite useful in academic and large public libraries.

Good overview of history of medicine

Great book, well thought out. The initial part of the book is chapters and essays on different topics. One critique I have is that the chapters and topics are very much individual entities and do not really flow from one chapter to another. It would be a bit difficult to trace the history of medicine in timeline fashion if you were to read this book. However, I don't think that is really the purpose of the book, and the essays themselves are quite interesting. The second part of the book is disease specific histories, which are pretty good, but a bit inconsistent in depth. Some diseases' histories are documented thoroughly and others are much more "general" in nature. Probably a reflection of the fact that they are written by different people. Nonetheless, a great resource and reference to have in any medical history library.

Outstanding Reference Source

This tome is exhaustive in the diseases it covers and the way it covers them. Kiple provides epidemiological patterns, history and geography, and skeletal manifestations on each of the conditions he and the board of editors describes. What the book lacks in pictures and diagrams, it makes up for in length and completeness of description. A helpful bibliography is provided. This book is well worth the price!

not much in the way of psychiatric information

very good info about a lot of epidemics, etc, but could have been influenced by spiritual and traditional understandings of psychiatric disease such as pellagra or tertiary syphilis - very good info about other cultural influences available to make good decisions about the future, what's worth retaining vs what needs to be controlled by young people
