In Byzantium monks did not form a separate caste, apart from society. They held loyalties not only to their own houses or monastic leaders, but also formed part of a nexus of social, economic and spiritual relationships which bound together the 'powerful' in the middle Byzantine state. Monasticism displayed a highly individualistic streak, unlike the Western religious 'orders'. Using hagiography, chronicles and, in particular, the newly available archives of the Athonite monasteries, this book reassesses the role of monks in Byzantine society and examines the reasons for the flowering of the monastic life in the period from the end of iconoclasm to the beginning of the twelfth century. It is the first study of its kind in English, and is aimed at anyone interested in either the Western or the Byzantine early medieval religious life.

Finally ! An high caliber, sensible introduction

Honestly, the first of its kind. A rich and truly significant era of art history meticulously researched has produced a truly wonderful volume aimed at university-level students, with thorough additional sources thoughtfully appended. Rodley is a leading British scholar of this period, with outstanding field experience. Majority of pictures are her own, and beautifully rendered. Absolutely should be a required text all art/art history libraries. A significant contribution to the canon. Future textbooks would do well to follow Rodley's lead in style and presentation.

Great Information,yet black and white pictures.

Great information, but unfortunately to completely enjoy and this text a supplement of another type with pictures conveying byzantine art would be necessary. IF you are easily bored this book will not sustain you. Most people need color pictures and thus you will be disappointed. However if you are looking for an overall historical representation of Byzantine art History this is a decent book.

Five satires by Juvenal

Reading satire in the original Latin can be problematic, since Roman authors usually assume a certain amount of cultural understanding from his coeval audience. Juvenal is no exception. I found Braund's commentary on Juvenal's Latin to be very helpful at explicating the author's syntax and organization, as well as providing a context for the larger unity of these five satirical poems. In addition to a thorough introduction, her commentary includes short essays after each individual satire. This book makes Juvenal's acerbic wit much more approachable to the student of Latin.

The text is well laid out and each satire is followed by an in-depth essay. However, the commentary is not particularly useful because it goes for the "just translate this line" method. Worth the purchase if you are serious about reading Juvenal, however. The contextual notes (history, culture, etc.), opposed to the grammatical ones, are quite useful for understanding what Juvenal actually means.
