While not neglecting matters of language and formulaic composition, the Commentary aims to provide guidance on questions of literary and narrative technique and poetic artistry. The Introduction deals with the problem of Homeric composition in general, and with the place of the Phaeacian books in the poem as a whole. There are also brief sections on Homeric meter and the text.

About the Author
Though he is traditionally credited as the author of the "Iliad "and the "Odyssey", there is no reliable information about an actual, historical Homer. In antiquity, he was an honored figure, despite little being known about his life or even his era; he was credited then with several other shorter works in addition to the two epics. Current scholarship tends to view the poems as the work of many hands over many years, with differing opinions on the role and importance of any single figure in their creation or promulgation.

Excellent for intermediate to advanced students
By Jon Corelis
This annoted edition of Books VI-VIII of The Odyssey includes the Greek text, a concise but useful introduction, and extremely detailed notes summarizing much earlier scholarship. Since the book was published in 1994, it's current with all but the most recent Homeric research. The book is physically very well produced -- my only quibble is that I don't particularly like the rather blocky Greek font used, but at least it's very clearly printed, which is increasing less often the case with Greek texts nowadays. The choice of these particular books of The Odyssey is a particularly good one, since their narrative, the novel-like description of Odysseus' sojourn among the Phaeacians, is one of the chunks of ancient Greek literature most attractive and accessible to modern readers.
If your Homeric Greek has gotten beyond the beginning level, you'll find this book invaluable for developing more sensitivity to the text by a close reading. And if you are a more advanced student of The Odyssey, you really need to have this book. It may be out of print, but should still be available through various Amazon vendors.
